DNA Fact Sheet

If you took all the strands of DNA in each of our 37 trillion cells and put them end to end,

they would stretch the diameter of our solar system and back again. That is over 10 billion miles!

Using Microsoft Word, with a Times New Roman 12-point font on 8.5" × 11" paper and displaying A, C, G and T in capital letters in equal numbers, you can fit 57 letters on a line and 46 lines on one side of a page, thus representing 2,622 base pairs per page (single sided). Thus, 1,206,980 single- sided sheets would be needed to display our entire genetic code (our genome) in this way. One would therefore need to use 2,414 reams of paper - 2.1 inches high- to print our genetic code in the format just described. A stack of that many reams of paper would stand 424.4 feet tall, approximately midway in height between the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument.
