The Names of Creation's
Master Chef
No single word in the human language can accurately suffice as a name for the Creator of the universe. What name could you ascribe to someone who existed before the universe was even created? In Psalm 90:2 , Moses expresses the eternal nature of God in the following statement: “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting , you are God." In essence, God is beyond our comprehension and imagination. As humans with our finite understanding, how can we accurately name such an eternal being when there is nothing on earth to compare with God? However, even though we cannot fully understand God here on earth, we can better discern His eternal nature by the names He has chosen for Himself as recorded in the Bible.
Elohim is one of the most frequently used names for God in the Bible. In fact Elohim appears some 2,750 times in the Old Testament. Elohim is a majestic plural, a plural word (such as the pronoun we or us) used to refer to a single person. In the Bible, we find four verses in which God refers to Himself using plural pronouns. The most well-known passage is Genesis 1:26 : “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.' " God’s divine greatness and transcendence are emphasized through the simple use of pronouns. Out of one word, Elohim , God reveals Himself as the Three-in-One omnipotent, majestic, and sovereign Creator of the universe.
