We-ḥō-šeḵ ʍ וְח֖ ֹשֶ ׁך LV+HEUHZIRU darkness Why darkness? Light will not be created until the following verse. There can be only darkness at this point. Al pinee tihom (reading from left to right) is Hebrew for was על־פני תהום over the face of the deep . After doing an extensive search on the Internet on the meaning of "was over the face of the deep", the best explanation I found from both scientists and theologians is, "we don't know. That’s all any real astrophysicist will tell you. "We don’t know." According to modern science, we can trace the start of the universe back 13.7 billion year to a very tiny fraction of a second when all the matter in the universe -- all of space and time itself -- existed in a tiny point smaller than a subatomic particle called singularity . I like this word, singularity ! It is a perfect description of the face of the deep ; when the distance across the universe was a single point measuring zero meters, zero inches, zero cubits and zero seconds across.
