Microsoft Word - Genesis One New

1. I was a firm believer that God created light and He, alone, is the sole Creator of the Universe. 3 3 Creation Day One: "Let there be light!"

2. Galileo Galileo (1564 - 1642) - I was the first scientist who attempted to calculate the 'speed of light'. I also invented the first reflecting telescope. Unfortunately I was accused of heresy for stating that the earth orbited the sun in an heliocentric orbit and placed under house arrest until I died.

In 1638, Galileo is often credited with being the first scientist to try to determine the speed of light (pictured above). His method was quite simple. He and an assistant each had lamps which could be covered and uncovered at will. Galileo would uncover his lamp, and as soon as his assistant saw the light he would uncover his. Galileo reasoned he should be able to determine the speed of the light. His conclusion: "The speed of light is really fast, at least ten times faster than sound!"
