Carefully examine at the two pictures above. The picture on the left is a man- made nuclear explosion. The picture on the right is a closeup picture of the sun. • List two th ings t hese pictures have in common? • What are two ways they differ? • Which one is produced by nuclear fusion? • Which one is produced by nuclear fission? Now, let ' s ask Albert Einstein to help us answer each of these difficult questions.
You have probably seen my famous equation E=mc² on T-shirts or in the movies. This equation is telling us that matter and energy are the same thing . In other words, a little bit of matter can be changed into a whole lot of energy. Y ou can transform matter into energy, and then back again . All you have to do is this:
• Take a little bit of matter. • Increase its speed to 186,000 miles per second (the speed of light). • Once matter reaches the speed of light, it changes i nto a lot of energy! • Slow the energy down again, it changes back into matter.
