Let me give you an easy to understand example of how wisdom works. All wise painters, plumbers and carpenters use a simple device called a plumb line to keep their work straight. A plumb line is a cord or string with a weight attached to one end. A plumb line applies the law of gravity to find right angles, to indicate the most direct route from top to bottom, and to keep things plumb (90 degrees). A plumb line doesn’t change or move. A plumb line always remains true to center. All work must line up with it or risk being crooked.

Today's students are experiencing a literal explosion of digital knowledge and information coming at them from every direction. Their active imaginations are constantly being enticed by alluring advertisements, evolving trends and nonstop media coverage that totally boggles the mind. They live in a world today perfectly described by the Apostle Paul over 2000 years ago as "ever learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth" ( 2 Timothy 3:7). They may grow up to master science, philosophy, mathematics, engineering, debate and other intellectual pursuits, but if they fail to gain the wisdom to discern what really matters most in life, what have they accomplished? The Greek word for “truth” is aletheia , which literally means “hiding nothing.” It conveys the thought that truth is always there, always open and available for all to see, with nothing being hidden or obscured. The Hebrew word for “truth” is isemeth , which means “firmness,” “constancy” and “duration.” Such a definition implies something that is everlasting and can be always be relied upon.
