Retired Academics LUNCHEON
A group of UJ academics who went into retirement at the end of last year (2021) attended a farewell luncheon on October 25, where Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, bade them “farewell, but not goodbye”. “It is not a goodbye, but a farewell, because we believe that many of you shall remain invaluable to UJ.
And some of you will continue to be engaged in the work of UJ, or continue in the roles you’ve been in,” said Prof Marwala. Prof Marwala also paid tribute to the profession of teaching that the retirees had devoted their careers to. “A teacher is a very important aspect of society. If you want to see the character of a nation, look at its teachers,” he said.
UJ’s President of the Convocation, Prof Boitumelo Diale, echoed Prof Marwala’s words, saying: “They (the retirees) are still part of us. Today we are celebrating the work they have done with us, and hope to journey with them in the future.”
