HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP PREVENT FALLS
When you visit us for the first time, our physical therapists will conduct a thorough physical assessment to help us better understand the exact reasons for your balance issues. We’ll run several movement screens testing your strength, mobility, balance, and gait to ensure we can identify all the factors contributing to your fall risk. From there, we’ll develop a customized treatment program utilizing techniques that most benefit your needs. Here are just a few of the approaches we might include: • Strength Training: Because reduced muscle mass can increase your fall risk, building strength is crucial in risk reduction! Improving core strength is particularly important, as your core muscles support and stabilize your spine. We’ll show you specific strengthening exercises to help you meet your goals. • Balance Training: We’ll also guide you through dedicated balance training exercises. We’ll start simply and gradually increase the difficulty to ensure you’re challenging your sense of balance to see improvements. • Balance-Focused Exercise Programs: Some people may also benefit from balance-centered exercise programs, such as Yoga or tai chi. Even regular walks around the block can help decrease your fall risk. Our therapists will help you find a program that suits your needs and ability level. • Education: We’ll work closely with you to help you understand your specific fall risks so you can better manage any risk factors. This may include activity modifications, utilizing mobility aids, or adjustments around your home to remove safety hazards. We can also help reduce your fear of falling and feel more confident in your mobility. • Vestibular Rehabilitation: Finally, for those with vestibular disorders, we can utilize a specialized form of physical therapy called vestibular rehabilitation that tackles those disorders head-on.
