THE ROAD TO CHIROPRACTIC

Began With Some Car Accidents

O ne car accident might send you to a chiropractor, but two car crashes within the same month started me down the path to becoming one. Back in the summer of

of that line eventually. What I didn’t know was how much my first experience with chiropractic would influence the kind of medical professional I would become. After that first visit with Dr. Dong and Dr. Konow in Rock Hill, I became a firm believer in being proactive about keeping the nervous system happy and healthy. You shouldn’t wait until you’re already in pain to visit a chiropractor. During my last semester at Winthrop, I had the opportunity to intern with Dr. Konow to see if chiropractic was really the career for me. Two blessings happened during that time (the second being far greater): First, I found that I wanted to pursue chiropractic, and second, I met Shelby McIntosh, the woman who would become my wife. In the summer of 2001, I enrolled at the Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic in Spartanburg. I continued to date Shelby, and we were married on June 21, 2003. I graduated cum laude from Sherman in late 2004 and worked for a few different practices until 2008, when I opened my own practice here in Murrells Inlet. Grand Strand Health and Wellness is a faith- based practice dedicated to helping the body heal itself. The body needs key ingredients to do this, including proper levels of water, nutrients, and oxygen and good nerve supply. Nerve supply refers to the process by which nerves help your brain communicate with your body. When nerve supply become impeded or blocked, it can result in spasms, headaches, and many other not-so-fun symptoms. At Grand Strand, we use the

1997, I was driving in the middle of a gully washer down the Tamiami Highway. Another driver cut me off and forced me to slam on my breaks. Unfortunately, the driver behind me didn’t break as quickly as I did and slammed into my rear bumper. In the next accident, about a month later, I hit a car in an intersection after they ran a red light. My sister suggested I see a chiropractor, but since I wasn’t sore, I figured I was fine — until about two weeks later, when the stiffness in my muscles started to get worse. It was a blessing in disguise. At the time of those accidents, I was a pre-med student at Winthrop University. I had come from a long line of medical professionals, and I knew I was going to be a part “We want to give our community a holistic option for healing that doesn’t involve pills, needles, or knives.”

latest developments in chiropractic tech, including the NASA inspired ProAdjuster, a decompression table, an electromagnetic field therapy machine, and several lasers, to help our patients get their nerve supply back in prime condition. We want to give our community a holistic option for healing that doesn’t involve pills, needles, or knives. Shelby and I have been married for 16 years now, and we have four incredible children — three boys and one girl. We are all incredibly active in our own ways, so you may catch us at the football field, the beach, out roller skating, or at gymnastics. I’ve loved serving our community through my practice these past 11 years, and I hope for many more years in the future. –Dr. Chris Garner

Grand Strand’s Patient of the Month CELEBRATING LORI NOACK

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EASY MONEY AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT The freedom of retirement certainly comes with its perks, but challenges of post-work living exist as well. Chief among them, for most elderly folks, are fears of social isolation and financial insolvency, as having coworkers and a regular income are not as common in retirement. Perhaps this is why so many retirees are flocking to home-sharing platforms like Airbnb or its seniors-only cousin, The Freebird Club. Airbnb reported last year that the 60-plus age bracket is its fastest- growing demographic worldwide, with the number of senior hosts as much as doubling every year. Home-sharing platforms can be a tremendous boon to a tight retirement budget. It’s an especially attractive option to elderly folks who find themselves rich in assets but struggling with liquid finances. Home-sharing allows them to tap into these resources. According to Priceonomics, U.S. Airbnb hosts bring in a monthly average of $924. But home-sharing can do more than boost your income. By opening a room in your home to travelers, you’ll encounter all kinds of people you might never otherwise meet, prompting dynamic social interactions I have the distinct pleasure of working with pleasant and hardworking staff, but I have also been blessed to know many wonderful members of this community by having them as patients. I have many patients who are regulars, which means my staff and I get the chance to really connect with them on a personal level. For this newsletter’s first edition, I can’t think of anyone better to talk about than Lori Noack. Lori has been coming to Grand Strand Health and Wellness every two weeks for the past seven years. She originally came in because of pain radiating between her right shoulder and hand, as well as headaches and lower back pain. Lori is the kind of patient who makes me love my job, she keeps me and everyone else smiling and laughing every time she comes through the door. There is never a dull moment when Lori comes in for her appointment. Lori is incredibly outgoing, loving, and full of energy. She takes time to speak with everyone as if they were old friends, whether she knows them or not. Her infectious positivity is one of the reasons she does so well with her treatments. None of this will come as

a surprise to anyone who

knows Lori, as her passion for helping others is evident in her work for the community.

Lori volunteers with her church and with the Barnabas Horse Foundation, a

faith-based nonprofit that provides equine therapy for children with special needs, such as sensory deficit disorders. Along with serving the community and serving the Lord, Lori spends her spare time snorkeling, swimming, gardening, and riding around town on her 2007 Harley Road King. She has also brought many of her family members into Grand Strand, including her husband, daughter, stepson, parents, and in-laws.

Why Seniors Are Flocking to Home-Sharing Platforms

and meaningful connections. The rating systems on Airbnb and similar platforms almost entirely prevent would-be troublemakers from entering your property, and users report that when a rare negative experience does occur, the company typically has your back. It’s a great way to stay socially engaged while staving off loneliness.

Best of all, running a modestly successful Airbnb usually doesn’t take much work. It simply requires you to set up a neat, welcoming space, keep in contact with your guests, and ensure the check-in and check-out processes are as straightforward as possible. In fact, senior hosts seem to have a leg up on their younger counterparts, as elderly hosts earn the most consistently positive ratings across the globe. Airbnb and The Freebird Club won’t make you rich, but they’re relatively low effort enterprises that come with some massive benefits. If you’re looking for a little busywork, some extra cash, and a little social interaction in your retirement, hosting may be your best bet!

Grand Strand’s Team Member Spotlight Celebrating Paige Mallorey

Over the years, I have had the good fortune to work with many people who go the extra mile in the workplace. While I can’t shout out everyone at once, I do want to give one team member the recognition they deserve each month. This month, I want to shout out one of our junior patient educators, Paige Mallorey. From cold laser to PEMF and decompression, Paige has been trained to do many different types of therapy. She is always eager to help and wants the best for both staff and patients. Her helping hands extend to every corner of the office. Whether she’s helping me brainstorm solutions, educating patients about their bodies and their treatment options, or anything in between, her passion for chiropractic shines through in everything she does.

Paige is also passionate about learning. She is currently working on her master’s degree online and getting certified in X-ray proficiency with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. In the workplace, she always takes initiative to research different patient cases or treatment options when collaborating with doctors, ensuring maximum treatment results and patient satisfaction. She is incredibly bright, both intellectually and socially. I’ve come to look forward to the sing-song way she greets the office every morning. Her bright and humorous demeanor keeps all of us laughing and smiling throughout the day. Outside of work, Paige puts her fierce, competitive spirit to good use on the golf course. She started playing in grade school and got a scholarship to play golf at St.

Andrews University in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Now, she loves doing trivia and game nights with family and friends and still gets out on the golf course with her husband, Todd. They will celebrate their one-year anniversary in October. They have two dogs: a pug named Tiger and a border collie named Jax.

2 Stretches to Improve Your Balance

For Better Balance and Flexibility 2 STRETCHES YOU SHOULD DO EVERY DAY

CALF STRETCH Your calf muscles can limit your ability to place your feet flat on the ground while doing lunges, squats, and other movements. If your calves are tight, stability can be difficult. To stretch your calves, stand facing a wall and put your left foot behind you, toes facing straight ahead. Lean forward, keeping your heel

Your fitness routine is likely centered on building strength, tone, and endurance. But what about your balance? As American Council on Exercise (ACE) certified trainer Robbie Ann Darby points out, improving your balance benefits everything you do. By improving your flexibility through stretching, you’ll be able to master the transitions between exercises and develop the power you need for better balance. Here are two essential stretches you can incorporate into your everyday routine. FOOT STRETCH Our feet carry us every day, and when they’re tight, our balance can be affected. Help ease foot tension with this stretch (which is also great for anyone who suffers from plantar fasciitis): Kneel on the floor, arranging your legs under you so that your shins and the tops of your feet are on the floor and your glutes are resting on the bottoms of your feet. Maintain an upright posture. Raise yourself slightly, pick up your heels, and tuck your toes under. Slowly ease your weight back over your feet so that your glutes are resting on your heels and your toes are stretched. This can be an intense stretch, so ease into it. If it’s too much right now, start by sitting in a comfortable position with one foot in your lap. Gently pull back on your toes until you feel a stretch. Hold for one minute.

on the ground and using the wall for stability, until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30–60 seconds, then switch sides. Try adding these stretches to your routine 3–5 days a week, building up to once per day, every day. If you’re experiencing balance issues or are concerned about falling, physiotherapy can help. Whether you experience balance challenges related to aging or an inner ear issue, physiotherapists can show you how to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility relative to balance — and make it fun in the process!
