OLIVE’S PERSPECTIVE PAWSITIVELY LEGAL:
Hello friends and furry companions! Finally, the keyboard is mine. (I thought they would never ask!) Olive here, the proud four-legged member of the amazing law firm owned by my mom and dad, Hillary and John. As the resident office dog, I have the inside scoop on all the exciting happenings and wag-worthy moments that occur at our injury litigation-focused firm. Allow me to share my adventures with you! Every morning, I jump with joy as I tag along with my humans to the office. Once we arrive, the first thing I do is look for my sister, Rachel, my favorite human besides my parents. After I give her lots of kisses, I happily settle into my mom’s cozy office, ready to lend a paw or simply provide some furry comfort to anyone in need. Being a poodle, I take my role as the office greeter very seriously. I always make my rounds, tail wagging, to welcome and charm each member of the staff. Meeting new clients is always a treat for me as well. There’s nothing like the excitement of making a new friend! Did you know that my dad, John, is not only an exceptional lawyer but also a devoted advocate for animals? He proudly serves on the board of directors of the Humane Society of Richland County. Knowing that my dad is working to make a difference in the lives of fellow furry creatures brings warmth to my heart.

When the weather is nice, my parents take me for a 2-mile run on the scenic bike trail after work. The wind in my fur and the loving presence of my mom and dad create a perfect bonding experience. We make quite the pawfect team, racing along the trail with the sun setting in the background. Back at home, I have my own special playtime ritual. Fetch in the basement with a tennis ball is my absolute favorite game. But let me tell you a secret — I’m extra motivated when there are bacon treats involved! The joy I feel when catching that ball is unparalleled. It’s the little moments like these that make life paw-some. Of course, a well-groomed appearance is essential for a sophisticated poodle like me. Once a month, I endure a visit to the groomer, even though I’m not particularly fond of it. But the end result is worth it — I come out looking like a million bucks, with my fur “boots” making me the envy of all the dogs on the block. Above all else, I cherish the unconditional love between my mom and dad and me. Whenever they return to me, even after a short time away, I can’t help but jump with all four paws off the ground, displaying my overwhelming joy. They call me their “love bucket,” and I feel their affection in every hug and snuggle we share.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all the wonderful clients, staff members, and fellow furballs who make our law firm such a warm and inviting place. Together, we’re making a difference in the world, one legal case at a time. Remember, no matter the challenge you face, we’ll be here to lend a helping paw.

NEVER DOUBT A CANINE’S SENSES
One Sniff Can Save a Life
Dogs are known for their keen sense of smell — on TV, you often see dogs that can find missing people or even search for drugs and bombs. When dogs use their extraordinary senses for a particular job, they’re often trained for that one purpose, but even without training, dogs do seem to know something is wrong.
The next day, Roger’s owners let him roam around outside. Roger began sniffing around Cohen’s home (some believe Roger had heard the man’s calls for help), and once Roger found the elderly man, he didn’t leave his side for the rest of the day. After a couple of hours, Frances Wall, Roger’s owner, began calling for Roger. When he didn’t immediately come home when she called, she started looking for him, and that’s when she found Roger and Cohen. She immediately called emergency services, and three firefighters came by the home to free Cohen. They quickly took him to the hospital because they worried about hypothermia.
Roger, the Jack Russell terrier-poodle mix, is a great example.
Our story takes place in Ringwood, England, in December 2022. Winter was in full swing, with temperatures below freezing. No one wanted to find themselves outside in the cold for too long because it could be dangerous. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to 94-year-old Morris Cohen, and he almost died.
Over a week later, medical staff released Cohen from the hospital, and now he gives Roger treats whenever he sees him. “I owe my life

Fortunately for Cohen, Roger’s amazing canine senses saved the day. It’s always great to have a furry friend around — you never know when their incredible skills will come in handy!
The man called for help several times, but unfortunately, no one could hear his pleas, and he remained stuck overnight.
INSPIRATION CORNER: DENNIS LAFERTY
Dennis, a military veteran and motorcycle enthusiast, has always embodied the qualities of strength, commitment, and responsibility — values with which he served our nation. At 59, life took an unexpected detour when he and his mother were involved in a serious car accident on the day of her 83rd birthday. Both sustained significant injuries and were catapulted into a long and challenging road to recovery. Through pain and hardship, their journey was marked by immense determination and courage. Dennis and his mom fought hard, working tirelessly to regain their previous activity levels. Despite the intense physical and emotional trauma, they managed to retain their positive outlook and infectious sense of humor. The recovery process, though grueling, did not dampen Dennis’ spirits. Instead, it breathed new life into his dreams. Bolstered by the funds recovered through our representation, Dennis and his supportive wife and dedicated sons fulfilled his lifelong dream of buying Cross Roads Country Store, a cherished local carryout shop. In addition to convenience items, Dennis and his family sell pizza, wings, and their most popular item — frog legs!
business has thrived, becoming an integral part of the community, much like the family themselves. The store’s success is a testament to Dennis’ unwavering resolve and dedication, even in the face of immense adversity. His life story — from the military, through a life-altering accident, to owning a thriving business — is a testament to his tenacity, resilience, and indomitable spirit. Dennis says he makes everything he can out of every day because tomorrow is never promised. “You have two choices in life,” Dennis says. “You can lie down and die, or get up and do.”
These days, Dennis has two 8-month-old dogs by his side — Cooper, a Siberian husky, and Delilah, a Maltese. Dennis says Delilah is the watchdog and Cooper lies around and lets her do all the work! Thank you, Dennis, for providing us with inspiration by guiding others to the joy of fulfilled dreams.

As a dedicated animal lover, Attorney John Rinehardt hosted an early shift at the Paws-a-Thon radio show and vowed to match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000. The Richland County community responded wholeheartedly, embracing the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our furry friends. HSRC is currently experiencing an influx of kittens due to “kitten season,” and they are actively seeking forever homes for these adorable felines. MEYER LEMON SEMIFREDDO
Hillary has been making this recipe since it was served to her by a friend in 2008. It is the perfect summer dessert — cold, creamy, citrusy. This dessert is like a frozen mousse, which helps explain its name: semifreddo, or “half-frozen.” Your arm will get tired from the stirring, but it is definitely worth the trouble!
INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted • 1 3/4 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled • 1 1/4 cups plus 2 tbsp sugar • 7 large egg yolks • 1/2 cup fresh Meyer lemon juice or regular lemon juice
• 1 tbsp plus 2 tsp finely grated Meyer lemon peel or regular lemon peel • 1/4 tsp salt • 4 cups mixed fresh berries (such as raspberries,
blackberries, blueberries, or quartered and hulled strawberries)
DIRECTIONS
1. Line 9x5x3-inch loaf pan with plastic wrap, leaving generous overhang. Sprinkle almonds evenly over bottom of pan. Using electric mixer, beat whipping cream in large bowl until soft peaks form. Refrigerate whipped cream while making custard. 2. In a large metal bowl, whisk 1 1/4 cups sugar, egg yolks, lemon juice, lemon peel, and salt to blend. Set bowl over large saucepan of simmering water and whisk constantly until yolk mixture is thick and fluffy and instant-read thermometer inserted into mixture registers 170° F, about 10 minutes. Remove bowl from over simmering water. 3. Using electric mixer, beat mixture until cool, thick, and doubled in volume, about 6 minutes. Fold in chilled whipped cream. 4. Transfer mixture to prepared loaf pan and smooth top. Tap loaf pan lightly on work surface to remove air pockets. 5. Fold plastic wrap overhang over top to cover. Freeze semifreddo until firm, at least 8 hours or overnight. DO AHEAD: Semifreddo can be made 3 days ahead. Keep frozen. 6. In a large bowl, gently mix all berries and remaining 2 tbsp sugar. DO AHEAD: Can be made 3 hours ahead. Cover and refrigerate. 7. Unfold plastic wrap from top of semifreddo and invert dessert onto platter; remove plastic wrap. Dip heavy large knife into hot water; cut semifreddo crosswise into 1-inch-thick slices. Transfer to plates; spoon berries alongside and serve.

There’s a tale of friendship, true and profound. A dog named Hershey, a pound puppy brave, And Biscuit, a stray, both seeking to be saved. Hershey, the dog, once lost and alone, Found a home, a place to call his own. With boundless energy, he leaps and plays, Filled with joy throughout his days. Biscuit, a wanderer, roamed the streets, With curious eyes and a heart that beats. Together they crossed paths, fate intertwined, A friendship formed, unbreakable and kind. Each morning, as dawn’s light starts to break, Biscuit wakes his mom, for breakfast’s sake. He nibbles her hair, a gentle plea, “Feed me, I’m hungry, it’s time for tea!”

In their tale, we find lessons to share, About acceptance, compassion, and love’s tender care. No matter our differences, big or small, Together, we can rise and proudly stand tall. So let’s celebrate Hershey and Biscuit’s story, Their unbreakable bond, an allegory. For in their friendship, we find hope anew, That love can conquer, no matter what we go through.
