How Do You ‘Live Long and Prosper’?
If we all have something in common, it’s that we want to live long and prosper. As you’ve noticed, we like to frame our articles around a mix of offbeat holidays as well as those that aren’t so offbeat. There’s always something interesting to learn. Wouldn’t you know it? March 26 is Live Long & Prosper Day. The “holiday” hasn’t been around long — only since 2017 — but the idea behind it is a good one. Of course, most of us are familiar with the phrase, “Live long and prosper,” which the late Leonard Nimoy popularized while playing Spock on the 1960s television show “Star Trek” and its many sequel shows and movies. Star Trek fans and non-fans alike know this phrase, and it’s had significant staying power over the years, probably because so many of us can identify with it. Plus, it’s often paired with the iconic Vulcan hand salute, which gives it even more staying power. Coming back to the day itself, it was created with the idea of both reflecting and looking forward. In terms of reflection, you can ask yourself, “Am I living the life I want to live and am I prospering?” Reflect on the ways you are living a fulfilled and prosperous life. And then, reflect on the ways you are not.
After that, you look forward — how can
you live a fulfilling and prosperous life? Is there something missing that you want? What can you do to alter your course? Think about this in areas such as relationships, family, spirituality, career, finances, health, and so on.
This is a great way to structure your goals, especially in retirement or as you plan for retirement. How do you want to live a fulfilling, prosperous life in retirement? Think about what you want to get out of your relationships, finances, health, hobbies, etc. You can assign goals to each area of your life to give yourself a more clear- cut picture of where you are now and where you want to go. And then go for it! Anyone can live long and prosper if they’re willing to make it happen.
