HIP, KNEE & LEG PAIN

Your hips, knees, and lower legs are tough—but injuries can happen to any of us. Your hips and knees are your largest joints, supporting your body’s weight when you’re moving around. They work in close coordination, giving us the mobility we need. Between injuries and normal aging processes, however, pain can sometimes flare up. If you’re experiencing hip, knee or leg pain, call us to schedule a closer look. WHAT CAUSES HIP, KNEE AND LEG PAIN? Hip, knee and leg pain are surprisingly common, and can come from a variety of factors. If you’re experiencing pain in any part of your leg, pinpointing the exact location of pain and being able to recall what you were doing when the pain started can help you determine the source of the pain. Several leading causes of hip, knee and leg pain include: • Sprains and strains • Tendonitis or Tendonopathy • Nerve inflammation from the low back WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms of leg pain can be varied. A decreased range of motion or stiffness in one or several joints of the lower

body may lead to pain over time. Reduced strength and joint awareness may also lead to a higher predisposition for injury or pain onset. These are impairments that are both treatable and preventable through physical therapy care. If you have been previously diagnosed with arthritis, there’s good news there too. Many folks have arthritis that shows up on an X-ray or MRI as they grow older, but not all of these folks have pain. Moreover, those that do have pain can often get good symptom improvement through mobility and strengthening exercises from physical therapy. That means that just because you have arthritis in an imaging report, it doesn’t mean you have to live in pain or commit to having surgery! If you experience any type of acute injury or trauma, substantial swelling, redness, obvious deformity, changes in hair growth around an area, or pain that is unrelenting or wakes you at night, those are times to touch base with your family medicine practitioner to rule out anything serious, such as a fracture, dislocation, cancer, or rheumatic disease. Fortunately, most lower body pain is musculoskeletal in nature and can be resolved within a few weeks’ time with a concerted physical therapy plan of care. Call us today if you’re suffering from leg pain - we’re here to help!
