PRIDE MONTH celebrating

A Note from Steuart Pittman , Anne Arundel County Executive

O ur libraries have time and again shown their superpowers – the power to connect, to educate and to innovate. Their power to connect provides our residents, local institutions, businesses and nonprofit organizations a safe space to share ideas, find solutions to difficult problems and to access vital resources. That heroism continues today through a recent pilot program in partnership with our Department of Health’s Gun Violence Intervention Team to distribute gun locks at library locations.

Their power to educate is evident in the multitude of information and resources that allow our families to explore new topics, and learn new skills. We see that power through the Kindergarten Readiness Program hard at work in our communities addressing the disparities in opportunity and progress that come from children not being prepared to enter school. With the need to respond to the changing demands of our residents post-pandemic and in an ever evolving world, the libraries responded with innovation. They took their services mobile to reach disconnected residents and created new ways to nurture curiosity and creativity. That work was made possible by the dedicated, forward-thinking library leadership and staff – we thank them.

This year’s budget invests in progress by providing additional funding to increase library staff salaries, funding the planning and construction of new library facilities, and continuing the Kindergarten Readiness Program so that our goal of 76% percent of students ready for Kindergarten by 2026 becomes a reality. We know we have more to do to fulfill our obligation as stewards of county government to grow the wages of our public servants, and continue to provide critical services, while also setting ourselves up for future economic challenges. We will do so with the certainty that our libraries are valuable partners.I look forward to continuing that partnership as we connect, educate and innovate so we can truly make Anne Arundel County The Best Place – For All .

The donor funded icon brings awareness to the many wonderful programs and experiences that are a reality at your library thanks to community donors. Why not say foundation funded? The Library Foundation is the conduit that stewards gifts given to your library. Donors are the ones that truly make the magic happen and we are so grateful for your support.
