ALLAN MACDONALD

Scottish artist Allan MacDonald studied at Edinburgh College of Art and graduated with an honours degree in Drawing and Painting. Continuing to paint, his work changed when he came across the paintings of Canadian artist Tom Thomson, one of the Group of Seven. Thomson’s exhilarating paintings and immersion in the landscape he painted has inspired Allan’s own process and vivid colour and light led pieces. Since then, Allan has painted in many remote parts of Northern Scotland where he now lives. His paintings capture the experience of being exposed to the elements, as much as the colours and textures of the rugged landscapes that surround him. Always carrying board and canvases with him, Allan likes to work outdoors on full size paintings rather than sketches. The reflective, almost prismatic qualities of settled snow amongst birch trees offer endless inspiration, but it is often towards the wild, elemental waves crashing over cliffs that Allan feels the strongest pull.

JANE CRUICKSHANK

Born in 1976, Jane studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, and completed her Master of Arts degree in 1999. Since then she has won numerous awards and scholarships including the Cooper and Lybrand Competition in 1996, the John Kinross Scholarship to Florence in 1997 and the James Torrance Memorial Award from the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1998. She exhibits her paintings widely throughout the United Kingdom. Using recognisable subject matter Jane employs an intense realism in her paintings, whether painting still life or portraits, always depicting her subjects with clarity and depth. She is particularly fascinated by the everyday objects of the past - candle snuffers, earthenware bottles and antique books. Attracted to the subtle play of light and reflections across each surface, Jane’s paintings are both intimate studies of everyday objects and reminders of the great works of the Old Masters.

FRANCIS BOAG

Born in Dundee, Francis studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in the late sixties where his tutors included Alberto Morrocco and David McClure. He went on to balance a successful teaching career with his artistic practice before the increasing demand for his work enabled him to leave education. Since then Francis has worked steadily to establish himself as one of the leading figures in a new generation of Scottish Colourists. Inspired as much by his favourite artists as from his surroundings in and around Stonehaven, or the colours and objects in his studio, Francis’ particular vision and style is always recognisable. From wind swept harbours to the agricultural patchwork of Edinburgh Castle, each of his paintings lead the viewer in to explore both surface and subject. Thin layers of acrylic paint are built up to create vivid colour and depth with rough, collaged elements adding texture and a vibrant, joyful quality to each painting..

PETER MUNRO

Peter Munro was born and brought up in the Highlands. He studied at Burslem School of Art, followed by Chelsea School of Art where he gained an honours degree in fine art-drawing and painting. Working as a full time artist since 1987, Peter has exhibited throughout the UK, Holland, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, along with numerous locations in the US, including the prestigious annual ‘Birds in Art’ show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin, for which his work has been frequently selected.

In recent years, Peter has been directly commissioned by both private and corporate clients, including Louis Vuitton, Veuve Cliquot, Holland and Holland, and the Swarovski Family. The London based fine art publisher Rosenstiel’s has provided a steady run of commissions to paint golfing scenes from a great many courses in Scotland, England, Ireland and the US. Peter’s painting ‘The Opening Drive’ was purchased by the Royal and Ancient to be displayed in their World Golf Museum in St Andrews. It was also on show alongside the Claret Jug at the following Open. This latest collection of paintings is the result of a train of thought and ideas which have been evolving over many years, and bring together a number of Peter’s interests. They are as much about the contrasting nature and juxtaposition of the elements within the painting; the soft texture of the plumage against the metal structures, the organic forms contrasting with the fabricated objects, and the movement of the birds around the static props. The character of the individual birds also play a part, helping to suggest the hint of a narrative, which adds to the overall dynamic. These are works that feel contemporary in execution and palette but which invoke older painting traditions and techniques.

SHONA BARR

Shona Barr was born in 1965 and graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1988 where she was also the recipient of the Landscape Prize and the Armour Prize for Still Life. She continued her education at Statens Kunstakedimi in Oslo, the Winchester School of Art, Barcelona, and the University of Southampton. In Shona’s work we discover an intense exploration of nature, ranging from the wild beauty of coastal landscapes to the exuberant and magnified abundance of garden flowers. Each painting begins as a watercolour painted in open air. The aim is to absorb the atmosphere, watch how changing light alters colours and mood, and to capture all this essential information on paper. Sometimes, only a small fragment of a watercolour becomes the basis for an oil painting. Working in a bold and direct way to retain freshness and energy, Shona investigates the interplay between abstraction and representation, playing with the boundaries where completely abstract marks come together as a recognisable image. Always working from life, nothing is invented and the luscious textures and colours are always inherent in the actual landscape or flora. Rather than portray the obvious though, the final paintings articulate and distil something of the hidden presence of her subject.

PATSY MCARTHUR

Patsy McArthur studied painting at Gray’s School of Art in the late 90s and gained a Masters in European Fine Art from the Winchester School of Art Barcelona program in 2001. Since then she has spent periods of time living and working in Barcelona, Berlin and Sydney and has undertaken residencies in NYC, Italy and Shanghai. Patsy has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and abroad, recently exhibiting at Context fair during Art Miami, and has held recent solo shows with Thompsons Gallery in London and Le Salon Vert in Geneva. She was a shortlisted finalist of the inaugural Castlegate Prize last year and this year was selected for both the RSA Annual and the SSA Annual shows at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Her drawings and paintings study space, light and movement. Interested in the fragmented and fleeting nature of experience, Patsy explores the interplay between submission and will, the moving and the fixed, and the figure and its environment in a constantly changing world. Often the moments she seeks to capture are those where we feel lost; in movement, in music, in a shard of light, in ourselves.

LOUIS SINCLAIR MCNALLY

Originally from Inverkip, Louis attended Gray’s School of Art in the mid-Eighties. He currently resides in East Lothian. Finding inspiration in the East Coast countryside and the Gothic majesty of Edinburgh, Louis’ works act as interpretations of the environments that we traverse on a day to day basis. He strips away evidence of the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing him to explore the distinctive character and grandeur of any given place. Often painting with oil on robust wooden panels, Louis has a painstakingly detailed approach. He creates paintings that are carefully composed and painted over many weeks. He often references his own drawings, photographs and memories and the resulting works can feel both uncanny and reassuring. In shining an atmospheric light on familiar locales, his compositions invite us to fully appreciate the essential tranquillity of the spaces we inhabit.

GEORGE BIRRELL

A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, George Birrell has enjoyed a long career in teaching and now paints full time from his studio in East Lothian. When he was 15 George visited the villages of the East Neuk of Fife and he’s been fascinated by them ever since. These are villages with such a unique character, and one that contrasts strongly with some of the more dramatic and wild subjects of Scottish landscape paintings. George’s paintings are never of specific villages but they pull together the many elements - the architecture, alleyways, harbours and fishing creels - that are quintessentially East Neuk.

CARINA PRIGMORE

Born in Sweden, Carina Prigmore moved to the UK to study Art and Design at the University of Wales. Moving to Scotland in 2001, she went on to study Conservation Biology at the University of Aberdeen. She currently lives and works in Carrbridge in the Cairngorms National Park. Taking her visual cues from the rugged Scottish landscape, Carina’s surroundings provide endless inspiration for her work. An avid rambler, she bases her work on the memory or feeling of a particular place in time, allowing her to imbue familiar places with a uniquely Scandinavian sensibility. Working in layers of acrylics, Carina uses a muted palette to depict the misty, Scottish landscapes that inspire her, communicating their subdued majesty and solitude.
