beat him and said, “ Pay me what you owe I” and had the man thrown into prison. He had forgotten already the great debt that the king had forgiven him. Jesus was trying to tell Peter that as the king had forgiven his servant, so God had forgiven Peter his sins. God has forgiven so much that we must forgive others.

he was putting on canvas his- great masterpiece, which the world knows today as “The Last Supper,” he became quite an-, gry with a certain man. Hot and bitter words ensued, in which da Vinci threatened the man with vengeance. When the great painter returned to his canvas, he found himself so perturbed and. disquieted that he could not compose himself sufficiently for the delicate work before him. This revengeful mood, it is true, did not disturb him so much while he sketched the face of Judas,'but when he began to paint the face of Jesus, it was quite different, and not un til he had sought out the man and asked for his forgiveness, did da Vinci find him self in possession of that inner calm which enabled him to give to the Master’s face the tender and delicate expression he knew it must have.—W . E. B iederwolf . Jesus Helps Peter with a Hard Question M atth ew 18:21-35 Memory V erse: “ Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matt. 6:12). Approach: One day, Peter asked Jesus a question. He said, “Lord, if some one does me a wrong, how often shall I forgive him? Seven times?” This seemed a great Jesus really meant was that we should for give a person every time he does us a wrong. Jesus told Peter a story to explain why he must show a forgiving spirit. The story was about a man who owed some money to a king. He owed the king ten thousand tal ents. This was a great deal o f money. The man had nothing with which to pay. He begged the ■king to give him time, and promised that then he would pay all that was due. The king felt sorry for the man and forgave him his debt. This kindness should have made the man willing to for give any one who owed him money, but it did not. He went right out and found a man who owed him about seventeen dol lars, and when the man could not pay, he Lesson T ext: Matt. 19:16-30. C omparing the lesson text with the par allel accounts in Mark and Luke, we learn that the inquirer mentioned in this lesson was an exceptional young man, possessed o f youth, health, wealth, position, and all that was calculated to make Him satisfied with life. He was eager to know the answer to his question, for he ran to Jesus and was not ashamed to ask his question publicly, and to face the probable scorn o f his fellows. Moreover, his atti tude shows that he was reverent and hum ble, and that he must have had some belief j t ó “ t o s many times to Peter. But Jesus showed him that it was not often enough. L e s s o n S t o r y : Peter must h a v e been surprised when Jesus said, “ N o t seven times, but sev enty times seven.” That would be four hundred and ninety times I - But w h a t

Object Lesson F orgiving and F orgetting

Objects: Two small images of a man, one made o f molding clay and the other cut from a rubber sponge. (Heart shapes may be used if desired.) Lesson : Pete and Pat are Christian boys, both having accepted Christ as Saviour. While they are brothers, still they are very different. I brought them along this morn ing to show you how they differ, and how like other people they are. Here they are. They are entirely differ ent in their looks, as well as in their ac tions. In our Sunday-school lesson this morning, we learned what Christ had to say about forgiving people. I wish Pete could learn this lesson. Whenever some one does something unkind to him, it is hard for him to forgive and forget. Notice that when I scratch his face, the mark of my fingernail remains. I take my finger and softly try to smooth out the scratch, but he still keeps a faint impression o f it. He is like people, who, when asked to for give some one, say, “I’ll forgive, but I’ll never forget.” This is not the kind of a Christian that pleases Christ. Pat is entirely different from his brother. When he is scratched, he does not keep the impression at all. You can poke and hit him all you want to, and still he does not keep any remembrance of it. When asked to forgive some one, he says, “ Sure! It didn’t hurt much. Perhaps it was as much my fault as yours.” The Christian who forgives and forgets is the one who pleases Christ most.'
