Meditation on the Lesson The resurrection o f our Lord and Sav iour Jesus Christ is the keystone in the arch of the gospel—“If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain . . . we are of all men most miserable.” Having a per sonal, direct knowledge that their Lord was risen in power, the apostles continu ally reminded the Christian disciples that the resurrection o f Christ provided a goal, a heavenly standard for conduct, and power for this present life—the power of the living Saviour. In the first verse o f our lesson, “I f ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God,” we notice that the resurrection and ascension o f Christ are considered, not as separate facts, but as the glorious outcome of one great process. And this exaltation o f Christ has an immediate bearing upon the Christian’s life. Christ is “risen” and “above.” As followers of Him, His disciples should be “risen” and “living” in “heavenly places.” He “hath raised us up together, and made us sit to gether in heavenly places.” In consequence o f this risen life, what should the Chris tian do? He should “seek those things which are above,” and “set your affections on things above.” “Things above” is rather an indefinite phrase till we discover that Jesus Christ is the summing up o f the things that are above. The great clear truth of these two verses is this: The only aim for a con sistent Christian life is to be like Christ, to be with Christ, to please Christ. Dr. Mac- laren said, “That aim should persist, like a strain of melody, one long, diapason note, through all our fives. Perfume can be diffused into the air, and dislodge no atom of that which it makes fragrant.” Not only do we have a heavenly goal and a heavenly standard of conduct, but we have also the risen Christ to give us power. If we have taken our place with Him in His death, letting His blood cover our sins, we have a close union with Him in His new fife (Col. 3:1, 3). In Romans 6 :4, Paul tells us, “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of fife.” To en courage us in this resurrection fife, we have the blessed assurance that Christ is “our fife,” and that when. He comes again in glory, we shall be with Him. Having identified himself with Christ in His death, every Christian should also con sider his fife as a risen fife, bearing fruit for Christ. Leader’s Helps I. F our P roofs of C h rist ’ s R esurrection How can one be certain that Christ is with God? It is a question of the utmost importance. There are four fines of proof. The first is the written evidence that Jesus rose from Joseph’s tomb. The second is historical—the existence, o f the Christian church. The third is mystical—the experi ence o f Christians as they partake of the nature o f Christ’s fife. The fourth is most
