who was about to build the temple for the Lord, is remarkable for its conciseness and comprehensiveness. Two essential truths included the entire situation. First, the whole undertaking of building the temple was dependent on the Lord. “The Lord be with thee.” “ The Lord give thee wisdom and understanding.” That gift of His presence and power was the Lord’s part. Solomon’s part was to take heed “to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the Lord charged Moses.” On God’s part— strength, wisdom and understanding; on Solomon’s—obedience. Accompanying the requirement o f obedience, was the promise, “ Then shalt thou prosper.” ' Could any rules be more simple? Later in the history o f Solomon, we read that God appeared to him in a vision and granted him the de sire of his heart, which was for wisdom and knowledge. Thus Solomon became the wisest man, and God added “riches, and honor, and wealth” such as none of the kings had before him. But when Solo mon ceased to obey God’s commandments, the outcome was not only his personal fail ure, but also the ultimate division of the kingdom. God set a similar standard in instructing Joshua, preparatory to making him leader o f the children o f Israel. The Lord said: “ This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Josh. 1:8). Success, we may conclude then, depends on obedi ence to God’s Word. •“A h !” you say, “I think many other things enter in.” What, perchance? “I should include honesty, faithfulness, perseverance, energy.” These are granted, for they all are taught in God’s W ord ; and when you obey His commands, you have these qualities. As the whole is greater than any of its parts, we can safely say, success comes from obedience to God’s Word. “ Provide things honest in the sight of all men” (Rom. 12:17). “Whatsoever things are honest” (Phil. 4:8 ). “ Let us walk honestly, as in the day” (Rom. 13:13). “ Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel con cerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him” (Dan. 6 :4). “More over it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful” (1 Cor. 4 :2 ), “There fore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58). Success, real, true success, is far more than money, fame, power, education, posi tion, or influence; it comes from a humble acknowledgment o f utter dependence on God and real obedience to His revealed will. To be truly in the will o f God is to find our highest joy, the realization that the best—His best—has been wrought through our lives. Leader’s Helps 1. A chievement of S uccess 1. The word “success” has a simple basic meaning. It implies motion toward the thing desired.— T apper . 2 . You must plant success if you want to raise it.— S elected .

Testament times, no one but the priests could enter the holy place, and only the high priest could enter the most holy place. But now by a wonderful provi sion, the Lord Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, has, “by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh,” made it possible for us to enter into the holiest place with boldness. Praise His name ! The writer exhorts the Hebrews to wor ship not only privately, but also publicly: “ Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another : and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” “ Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpen e d the countenance o f his friend” (Prov. 27:17). God has ordained that Christian fellowship in the public assembly shall aid man’s growth in grace. Leader’s Helps I. T he E ffects of G od ’ s G lory There is in the heart of every true wor shiper a profound sense of humility and self-abasement. Pride, self-righteousness, and self-sufficiency have their source in ig norance o f God. The angels o f heaven hide their faces in His presence and cast their crowns before His throne, and thus say in effect, “We are not worthy to be hold Thy glory; all that we are and have cometh from Thy love ; our existence, hap piness, dignity, and immortality we owe to Thee.” The knowledge of Him and the vision of His glory should produce the- same effects in our minds.—T. J ones . II. T h e E xtent of W orship Isaiah, transported by faith into the inner sanctuary, was rapt into the worship o f the seraphim, and joined in spirit in the unending adoration of the Triune God. “ Holy, holy, holy, Lord God o f Sabaoth ; the whole earth is full of Thy Glory.” The herald angels poured forth upon the plains o f Bethlehem the song of heaven, “ Glory to God in the highest,” and our sad earth heard, and was comforted. Angels, help us to adore Him; Ye behold Him face to face! But even these bright intelligences are unable to show forth all His praise.— H astings . III.
