SELF CARE IS A PRIORITY IN RECOVERY. Get plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep affects every aspect of your health and leads to negative moods and emotions and a lack of energy and motivation. It’s difficult to focus on recovery when you’re tired.
As I arrive home after a hectic visit to Ireland where I worked from home and fitted in all the family and friends visits that I wanted, I am emotionally uplifted but also tired. And when possible over the coming week I will be practising self-care. It encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can feel well taking proper me-time to ensure a healthy balance in your life. (While some may misconstrue self-care as selfish, it's far from that!) Our bodies are like a machine in many ways and needs fuel mentally, physically and spiritually. Eating healthy food makes you feel good, and when you feel good, you’re less likely to entertain that crack in the door that Moderation Mary wants you to walk through when we are low and bored. You would not believe the amount of women who drank because they were bored!!
Exercise .improves your mood, energy, and concentration and promotes better overall health. Regular exercise is an important stress reducer and a potent deterrent for relapse. For me, I will walk taking in some local parks while listening to one of my podcasts and switch off from the world for a while. This week will include going to our local garden centre to buy winter plants to fill up the patio and I will be going for colour and lots of it so when I look out from the sitting room I will feast my eyes on a vibrant colour palette of blooms. And that is mother nature gifting me a lovely sense of connection every day of the week! The joys of a sober break are that I am not tired, hung over or feeling bad post a return home. I feel wonderful having spent quality time with those that I love and want to ensure my self-care routine is solidly in place this week to replenish my emotional batteries!
