UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF POOL DISTRIBUTION IN SUPPLY CHAINS At its core, pool distribution revolves around consolidating shipments from various origins destined for a specific region and transporting them in full truckloads to a central distribution point within the destined region. This approach is particularly beneficial for companies whose headquarters or primary operational bases are situated outside their intended delivery areas. For example, consider a company with its main headquarters or distribution center in Pennsylvania that needs to send shipments to Gadsden, AL, and Tupelo, MS. Instead of dispatching separate trucks to each location, the company employs pool distribution by transporting a truckload to a central point, like Nashville, TN , and then distributing the cargo as individual LTL shipments from there. It’s important to note that pool distribution isn’t for every shipper or shipment. It may be better to choose traditional LTL for shorter distances or better rates. It just depends on the shipment characteristics, distances, and rates. Pool distribution is an effective solution for minimizing handling and cost-efficiently delivering freight to regions where the customer does not have a direct presence.
