Playing Your Hand

This is the hand you’ve been given. You have to play it. Is life fair? Not always, and it can be unpredictable. Everything can be going smoothly, then you get hit with a curve ball that you just didn’t see coming. How do you keep going? How do you keep your head above water and still succeed? Stand up straight. Square your shoulders. Hold your head high. Breathe, and swing from the rafters. Success in life is not about avoiding trouble. It’s about getting up again and again. It’s about resilience.

What is Resilience?

Resilience is having the capacity to stand and face your challenges, whatever they may be. It’s a decision that you make that no matter what, you’re going to finish. It’s called having a “bounce back”, and as you’re bouncing back, you’re also learning. When tough things happen, take the time to stop and look at all the factors. How did you get here? How did you participate and contribute to this outcome? What can you learn from this so that you can avoid repeating it? Don’t rush through a hard situation. Take the time to reflect on what happened; what didn’t happen; and how can you prepare for a different outcome? This will position you for more successful results in the future. This analysis will help you develop strong character, perseverance, and resilience. This is what separates the men from the boys. People who are resilient don’t see failure. They see opportunity and roll up their sleeves. They mentally command their desired result and move towards it. This situation is just the first stepping stone. There will be more, and they’re ready. They are determined. They are also picking up new skill sets along the way. Excuses are never allowed. The crutches were thrown in the dumpster last year.

How can you become more resilient?

1. Change Your Mind

How you think and what you think shapes your response. If you settle in your current situation, you’ll never grow. You’ll never change. You just might miss out on meeting amazing people, your public. On the other hand, if you believe that “more” is out there for you, you will get moving. Who’s knows? Maybe those amazing people are waiting to meet YOU.

2. Learn From Failure

When things go wrong, take a minute to discover three things that you need to learn, three skillsets that you didn’t have, three ways that you could have handled the situation differently. Think about how that could have impacted your outcome. It’s okay if you haven’t figured it all out yet. Keep talking. Keep asking questions. Keep reaching.

3. Add To Your Circle

Is your current community one that supports and understands you? If not, that’s okay. Everyone is on their own path. This is a great time to assess what guidance you need in your life. Look into new groups of people who share your perspective. Find that tribe that is moving forward. Discover new hobbies and interests. Chances are, they are looking for you too. Having supportive people in your corner makes the dips of life a little easier. Realize that you’re never alone. Just keep reaching.

4. Get Moving

As you grow mentally and emotionally, it is important to balance your health with the new found you. Begin to incorporate daily exercise into your routine. You will need energy as you begin to embrace new opportunities and new friends. Rest is vitally important as well. Don’t look at your “to do” list or pile of bills before going to bed. Avoid anything that triggers or upsets you. Whatever situations are looming over you, can wait until tomorrow. Night time is your mind and body’s

9

www.morethanawinnermagazine.com

win@morethanawinnermagazine.com

time to reset. This part of the equation cannot be ignored. Getting a good night sleep and rest is imperative. Facing the day with a “ready” mindset sets you up for success.

5. Define Your Target

It’s important to identify an accomplishment when it stands before you. How will you recognize it? Setting clear targets gives you direction. It helps you move forward because you have made the decision to accomplish “x”. Define why hitting this goal is important? What happens if you don’t hit the target? How will that impact yourself and others? Who is relying on you to show up? Sometimes, your decision can affect your public, those people who are waiting to meet you. Once you’ve attained your goal, be sure to celebrate YOU!

6. Pivot

When the “unexpected” rings your doorbell, answer it and become fluid. As life turns, you turn with it. That may include bending, moving faster, or slowing down. Keep your eyes open to what’s in front of you while keeping your target in focus. Flexibility will help you avoid bruises.

7. Forgive You

It’s important to remember that you are human, and humans make mistakes. So, what if you tried, and it didn’t work out? It doesn’t matter. You’re still here. It didn’t take you out. That alone tells you that you are a winner. You may have suffered a setback, but you’re still here. You’re still breathing which means you still have an opportunity for something bigger, better, and greater. You’re kind to others. Be kind to yourself. When you look in the mirror, give yourself a smile. You deserve it. By the way, you’re beautiful. You are important. You are needed.

Most men will receive 1 compliment a year. Most women will receive 8.

What is the next compliment that you want to hear?

Jason: I work hard, and I’d like for someone to notice.

Jason, we see you. You get up at the crack of dawn. You don’t call in sick. You don’t take vacations. Your boss can depend on you because you are a man of integrity. So, for that Jason, we celebrate YOU. You are fierce. You are brilliant. You are diligent. You take care of your family. You are an amazing husband and a compassionate father. You are an unsung hero. Jason, take a bow. YOU ARE DOING IT!

Mike: I have a wife that doesn’t support me in my dreams.

Mike, dreams keep people alive. Dreams give you direction and passion. There may always be mockers in life or people who just don’t understand. But don’t stop dreaming. Ignore the naysayers. We, at More Than A Winner Magazine, believe in dreams. So, write the dream down on paper. Start the business plan. Look for resources and vendors. Identify people who could push your dream further. Mike, you are next level. Your dreams are next level, and soon, THEY WILL ALL SEE!

Betty: I’m a single mother of four, and I’m tired.

Betty, you are a BOSS rearing four children by yourself. It can’t be easy because all the responsibilities lie on your shoulders. It’s okay to feel weary, but don’t give up. The fact that you have four people that you are guiding into adulthood is a sign that God could trust you with this task. He knew that you would pour into them a sense of honesty, integrity, hard work, and love for people. He knew that you are diligent enough to complete this task and complete it with excellence. Betty, you may not see it, but adjust your crown because you are a QUEEN!

My Job Search

Graduating was supposed to be the beginning of my future, the moment when years of studying, late-night cramming, and sleepless nights finally paid off. I walked across that stage with a degree in hand and a heart full of hope. I was so excited. Six months later, that hope has been tested in ways I never imagined. I’ve sent out hundreds of applications, tailored each resume, and poured my heart into every cover letter, yet the responses have been few and far between. The rejections come quickly. As the months pass, I’m getting a little nervous. The grace period on my student loans has ended, my rent is overdue, and the pile of bills on my kitchen counter keeps growing. The financial strain is suffocating, and I find myself questioning my worth. Did I work this hard for nothing? Was my degree a mistake? It doesn’t matter. I’m in it too deep to give up now. Every morning, I wake up and treat my job search like a 9 to 5 job. I improve my resume and attend networking events. I apply for positions I may have once overlooked, considering fields I never thought I’d enter. Some days are harder than others. The rejection emails hurt. The waiting game is painful, and doubt whispers in my ear. But I remind myself that it won’t always be like this. I can already see myself in the future managing my own department. I believe

and know my chance is right around the corner. I’ve learned to push forward even when the odds feel stacked against me. I know I will not fail if I don’t give up. My situation is not unique, and I know there are countless others just like me. To those who are in the same boat, I see you. I know the frustration. But I also know that we will make it through. The job that values my skills, my dedication, and my perseverance is out there. Until then, I will keep showing up, keep applying, and keep believing in myself. Because giving up is not an option, and success is only a matter of time.

Grandma Connie

Some of my favorite memories are cooking breakfast casseroles with my Grandma Connie. Her tiny kitchen always smelled like love. She taught me songs from her childhood days while she cracked eggs into a big pink bowl, and I got to help by grating cheese. For her famous breakfast sausage casserole, Grandma Connie cooked the sausage and onions in her favorite old pan, and sometimes she’d let me have a little taste of the cheese. She liked to joke about having a “secret ingredient,” and I always tried to guess what it was. We worked together to put everything in the pan, then waited while it baked and made the whole house smell amazing. It wasn’t just about the food. It was about spending time with this beautiful lady, Grandma Connie.

Add bell pepper and continue cooking until meat turns brown. Drain excess oil from pan. Transfer sausage and peppers to a casserole dish. Top with grated cheese. Crack the 12 eggs (not beaten) on top of the sausage mixture. Add salt and pepper. Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until eggs are cooked.

Ingredients

1 lb of breakfast sausage with skin removed ½ c of grated cheddar cheese 12 eggs 1 diced green pepper 1 tbsp of olive oil ¼ tspn of salt Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Heat olive oil in pan over medium heat. Add sausage and separate meat allowing it to cook evenly.

CRASH

It was October 2nd, 2021. I’ll never forget it. I was driving home after a long shift at work when my life changed forever. It was raining. I drove through the green light, and another driver ran a red light and slammed into my car at 75 miles per hour. He slammed into my life at a 100 miles per hour. I went spinning into a streetlight. Everything stopped. I could see & I could hear, but I couldn’t move. The pain started kicking in. I could feel it. I just started screaming. Other drivers stopped and came to help. Someone called 911. I was rushed to St Paul hospital. The doctors took one x-ray after another. Dr. Sanchez, walked into the room and told me that I had a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and my left leg was broken in three places. This didn’t look good, and it didn’t sound good. Dr. Sanchez said that the recovery would be long and grueling with no promises of ever walking again. Here I was just trying to get home. Now my address was Constant Pain. The painkillers were not working. Sleeping was a nightmare. This just didn’t make sense. It wasn’t fair. My family and friends rallied around me. They did what they could, but I knew it was up to me. After one month,

I started physical therapy. My address moved from Constant Pain to Torture Street. The warden in charge of my physical therapy had it in for me. I think someone told her that I stole 500K from her. It was the worst Christmas of my life. I had to learn how to stand, how to walk, how to hold a spoon. I felt like an invalid. It felt that I would never get my life back. It felt like I would never leave Torture Street. In February, I started a new therapy with an actually nice therapist. I think she came down from heaven compared to that last one. I started making strides. I was able to sit up on my own for the first time since the car accident. I took my first step with a walker. By March I was walking with a cane. This was my beginning. I knew in my heart I was leaving Torture Street. I started journaling to make the days go by and to also remind me of the progress that I was making. In the group sessions, I started sharing my small victories and that seemed to help the other patients not give up. They became my new extended family. We looked after each other and encouraged each other when someone was feeling down. This CRASH changed me. It changed my perspective about life

20

www.morethanawinnermagazine.com

win@morethanawinnermagazine.com

and the people in my life. It taught me patience, gratitude, and how to celebrate the little things. It also gave me a lens to see others who were suffering. Exactly nine months after the accident, I stood in front of my therapy family and walked without a walker or cane. I stood straight, and I stood tall. I couldn’t have done it without all the people in my life, even the warden from hell. I realized that

my recovery wasn’t just about me walking again. It was a test of endurance. It was a test of resilience. It took a while, but I passed. This CRASH has pulled the true me out of me. Now, I know that I can truly make it in life. I have what it takes to push through anything. Today, I use the CRASH to help others. I speak at safe driving events. My story really hits home. What’s your story?

My son, Oliver

When I found out that I was going to be a father, I just couldn’t believe it. Here I was, 47, and becoming a father for the first time. A little complicated though. The young lady that I was dating was not quite as thrilled. She was a career woman who had a path already etched in stone. I totally understood because that was my mindset in my 20s, 30s, 40s and now 47. I didn’t plan on this new development, but I had to admit that I was excited. I couldn’t stop thinking, “I’m going to be a father”. Will I be a good father? Am I prepared? Will I be as good as my dad was? Whatever the outcome, I felt I was ready. So, my girlfriend and I made the decision that I would be the sole parent and provider of our child, and she agreed to turn all parental rights over to me. Great. Let’s do it. So, I prepared a room in my house for my new child. This opened a world that I just never envisioned for myself. Six months into the pregnancy, we learned that there were some concerns about the baby. The doctor detected some developmental issues but couldn’t be sure until the actual arrival of the baby. By the way, we learned that we were going to have a son. My heart just exploded with pride. I was going to teach him everything that I knew. I decided on the name, Oliver, after my father. Everyone who saw me just saw my smile that extended from one ear to the next. I was so excited. Oliver arrived. Everything seemed fine. He slept through the night without any issues. I quickly learned how to change diapers and why you need to burp a baby immediately after a feeding. However, after several appointments, the doctor diagnosed Oliver with autism. Okay, I didn’t see this coming. Did he get the diagnosis right? Did he read the correct chart? Was he talking about my Oliver or someone else? The doctor just didn’t understand. This was the only child that I would ever have. This was my legacy. On top of that, I was rearing him by myself. No help from anyone. I’ve never been an emotional person, but I felt it, and I felt it all: FEAR. CONFUSION. HEAVINESS. DESPAIR. I knew that single parenting came with its challenges, but this was next level. I was 47. By the time Oliver turned 20, I would be 67. Would he be able to navigate this world? Would people try to take advantage of him? Would he understand how people operate, and would they understand him? Would anyone be able to see his kind

28

heart and appreciate the innocence of his soul? In that moment I knew that I had to be strong, smart, and resilient for me and my son, Oliver. This was my test. This was my assignment. My life in corporate America taught me to think outside the box and find answers when others settled for the status quo. I’ve never let an employer down, and I refused to let my son down. That day I made the decision to settle in to my new reality. Each day was a learning experience for me. Oliver would get upset if a puzzle piece didn’t fit just right into the other shapes. I could relate. If my life did fit exactly how I expected, I became irritable. There were also days when Oliver was just the happiest kid on the planet. He would laugh when the doorbell rang or when his favorite song played over and over. I could relate. I felt immense joy when my son looked at me and just smiled. His eyes seemed to tell me that he loved me, and I have to be honest, I felt it. There were also days when the world seemed to be crashing in for him. Going out in public was a challenge. Crowds and noises irritated him to the point of non-stop crying. The noise level was something that he just couldn’t process. Our excursions into the public became few. I could relate. I have to admit that I’ve always enjoyed being homebody. It’s peaceful, and my home is my haven. Some days are super special. When Oliver turned three, I started to see a glimmer of hope. We were in the kitchen, and he was eating a hot dog. He offered the hot dog for me to eat and looked directly at me and said, “Dad”. Normally, he just pointed, but this was the first time he called me “Dad”. Don’t tell anyone, but my eyes started leaking. All I could do was hug him. This was my son. This was groundbreaking. This was a good day. I find myself growing as a person, as a man, and as a father. I’ve learned that Oliver is not just a child living with autism. He’s a little boy that is simply growing and learning one step at a time like all of us. I’ve also learned that I’m not just a single parent. I am a father and an advocate to an amazing child. Every day I have to keep going. I have to be resilient. There are no days off. His progress depends on me showing up daily. I choose to be optimistic. I choose to be patient. I choose to keep learning and adapting. Becoming a father has been a journey. Being Oliver’s father has taught me that being strong isn’t about overcoming struggles, its’ about never giving up. And for him, I never will.

I never thought I would find myself pregnant in the middle of my residency. I had spent too many years sacrificing sleep, my social life, and even my own well-being to make it this far. Medicine was my dream, my passion, and my purpose. But suddenly, my world was flipped upside down by two pink lines on a test that I took on my lunchbreak. At first, I was in shock. How would I continue my grueling schedule with morning sickness? How would I manage 28-hour shifts while growing another life inside me? And the biggest question of all, how would I do this alone? The father of my child, a man I had once trusted, made it clear he wanted no part of this. He suggested that I “take care of it” and move on. I won’t lie. I felt absolutely broken. The weight of uncertainty was crushing, and there were moments I wondered if I could do this at all. But deep down, I knew I had no choice. I had fought too hard, worked too many hours, and poured too much of myself into medicine to let this be my breaking point. So, I did what I always do. I pushed forward. I continued my residency, waking up before the sun rose and coming home in the dark. I fought through the nausea, exhaustion, and swollen feet. I took judgmental stares from some colleagues who whispered behind my back, questioning my ability to be both a doctor and a mother. But I also found unexpected allies: attending physicians who encouraged me, co- residents who covered for me when I needed a break, and nurses who slipped me food when they noticed my energy dropping. There were days I cried in the supply closet from sheer exhaustion, but there were also days when I felt I could take on the world. I was growing a life while saving lives. Every kick I felt reminded me that I was doing this not just for myself, but for my child. I wanted my baby to grow up knowing their mother was strong, capable, and unbreakable. The Pregnant Resident narrated by Finley

44

www.morethanawinnermagazine.com

win@morethanawinnermagazine.com

The moment I held my baby for the first time, I knew every sleepless night, every moment of doubt, every hurdle was worth it. Becoming a mother didn’t weaken me. It made me stronger. It reshaped my perspective on medicine, on compassion, on resilience. Residency is designed to break you, to push you to your limits. But I learned that my limits stretched far beyond what I ever imagined. I didn’t just survive residency while pregnant. I thrived. To any woman facing the same journey, know this: you are stronger than you think. Your dreams don’t have to end when life throws you an unexpected challenge. If anything, your dreams can become even more meaningful. And when you look into your child’s eyes, you’ll know, without a doubt, that you are unstoppable.

The Strength Within by June Secand

When storms arise and skies turn gray, And hope feels like it drifts away, I stand my ground, I will not bend, For I am built to rise, not end.

The winds may howl, the rains may fall, But deep within, I hear the call. A whisper soft, yet fierce and true, “You’re stronger than what you’ve been through.” Each scar I bear, a tale untold, Of battles fought and lessons bold. Not every path is smooth and bright, Yet still, I walk, I chase the light. For in the cracks, the light shines through, And from the pain, my strength renews. Big Henry

I’ve always dreamed of starting a business; being my own boss; and treating customers the way that I wanted to be treated. I shared my dream with my friends, but no one took me seriously. They just shook their heads and walked away. It was like I was speaking a different language that no one else on the planet understood. It didn’t matter because I believed in my dream. I decided to roll up my sleeves and made the decision that I would start my own BBQ catering business or die trying. I did my best to write a business plan. It wasn’t fancy, but it had potential. I went to bankers, investors, and people that I knew had money. They all said the same thing, “I just don’t think this is going to work.” It didn’t matter. I was not going to let their blindness stop me. I had a dream. I’m not a person who gives up. I knew I just had to figure out a way to make it happen. My grandfather, Big Henry, taught me that resilience and hard work would always see me through. My BBQ business, in my mind, was going to be a huge hit. I’ve always loved BBQ. Like, who doesn’t, if it’s done right. When I was a little boy, Big Henry, showed me the ropes. Every summer I would spend hours upon hours with him spicing the meat, making sure enough wood chips were in the smoker, and of course, our secret BBQ sauce. He shared that his grandfather passed it down to him. Now, he was passing it down to me. I’ve never tasted anything like it on the planet. He would often tell me, “Great barbecue isn’t rushed; it’s created”. I’ve never forgotten those words, and now it’s my time to create. I learned everything that I knew from Big Henry, but I never went to culinary school. I had no formal training. All I had were my summers with Big Henry, and I felt that that was more than enough. If others weren’t going to take a chance on me, I would. I took all the money that I had in savings and went after my dream. I started with one small smoker and sold BBQ plates from my backyard. Even after some success, I went back to investors to see if they would fund the next stage of the business because in my heart, I knew it was time to grow. One after another, they said, “No”. That was okay. I wouldn’t let them get me down because this was my dream, not theirs. And you can’t cancel what a man dreams. At night I

would go to bed absolutely exhausted, but I could still hear Big Henry telling me, “Great barbeque isn’t rushed; it’s created.”

I started catering local events, festivals, and concerts. I gave away free samples, and the word got out. Then, the magic started happening. People were talking. My phone started ringing. The orders became consistent. At one event, a local food critic tasted my brisket and gave an over-the-top review. That was it. Now corporations were calling me to cater their events. With the profits, I opened a storefront, invested in more equipment, and hired staff. It happened slowly, but it happened steadily. On top of that, I did it with no debt, one step at a time. Little did I know that the people who turned me down were simply pushing me into my destiny. Their rejection forced me to dig a little deeper and dream a little harder. They did me a favor. I’m grateful for them. Today, my BBQ is the talk of the town. People come to our storefront for lunch, dinners, special events, weddings. My heart is full, and Big Henry was right. Resilience and hard work will always see me through.

Breakthroughs

Maria S. I did it. I finally finished my book. I’m a published author. It took me three years to write it, but it’s done. On top of that, I’ve sold 150 copies on Amazon. Jamal P. I’ve always carried extra weight. In school it didn’t matter because I played football. I believed, the more weight the better. Not so much at 45. The doctor told me that I needed to lose 50 pounds. It took me nine months and a personal trainer. The 50 pounds are off and staying off. Lena F. I took a class in coding which

cost 10K. I soaked up everything I could and asked a million questions. I found two investors, and we just launched an app on budgeting. It’s the best 10K I’ve ever spent. Nina W. My husband and I used to travel all the time. After he died, I thought I’d never leave my home. Then one day, I decided that I wasn’t going to be depressed anymore. I joined a women’s travel club and met the most incredible ladies. We took our first trip together to Italy. It’s not the same as the trips that I used to take with my husband, but it’s a new adventure with new friends.

FINISHING

After going through a tough divorce and taking a lower paying job to stay close to my dad, who was very sick, life became really hard. Even with everything going on, I still wanted to keep learning, and I was excited when I got the chance to study for free. I saw it as a way to stay strong, build new skills, and help more people. But things didn’t go smoothly. A professor didn’t think my experience in business was good enough for his doctoral program in Higher Education Administration. That was tough to hear. During my interview for the program, I said, “Business and education both deal with people and how things are run. I still have a lot to learn, but I do have useful skills.” Even though I was told “no” at first, I didn’t give up. I believed that my different background could actually be helpful, not something that held me back. I knew that working hard and being open to learning would help me catch up. Four years later, I graduated. On top of that, the same professor who first doubted me ended up becoming my advisor. That experience taught me how important it is to never give up and to use all the different skills and knowledge I had. Finishing the program, especially after someone questioned if I belonged there, became one of my proudest moments. It wasn’t easy. I had to work hard to build a good relationship with the professor and adjust to a tough academic program. But I made it by staying focused, asking for help when I needed it, and always trying to learn more. After a family relocation and the elimination of my corporate leadership role, I founded Planning Management Consulting LLC. My next target is to expand our reach, helping more individuals and organizations navigate change with confidence and integrity. To achieve this, I am focusing on enhancing our service offerings, building a robust online presence, and fostering partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations. You can find me at Planning Management Consulting LLC, where we help people navigate change with confidence and integrity. Let’s embark on this journey together.

Getting a chiropractic adjustment is important because it helps keep your body working the way it was designed to function. Sometimes, the bones in your spine can get a little out of place from things like bad posture, sports, or even just sleeping wrong. When that happens, it can cause pain, stiffness, or even make it harder for your nerves to send messages to the rest of your body. A chiropractor carefully moves those bones back into the right position, helping you feel better, move easier, and even stay healthier for the long run. Supporting Spinal Health You’ve only got one spine. Take great care of it with supportive chiropractic care.
