Register for summer quarter opens Monday, May 9th at 9:00am!
One of the best parts of my job is seeing firsthand the impact Callanwolde has on the community. In 2023, for the first time in our history, we hosted 50 students from a Title I school in South DeKalb, Cedar Grove Elementary, for a week of summer camp. The kids received an art education normally reserved for private school children, and the results were amazing. Their elementary art teacher was blown away by the painting and drawing skills the students picked up at camp. Principal Norman Thomas, commented that we helped one normally “wiggly” young man named Zion focus in the classroom. The big news in 2023 was the demand for classes, workshops, and summer camps increased 33 percent and 51 percent when combined with the work we do with underserved communities. Funds raised at the 2022 Gala helped fuel this increase and record donations in 2023 secured the future of even more support for 2024. Callanwolde invested heavily in its Art Scholars programming, supporting over 300 students who qualify for Title I assistance, versus 50 students in 2022. Support for previously homeless communities expanded beyond veterans’ programming to include adults also overcoming substance abuse, families, and deaf and hard of hearing adults. The adults enjoyed several Jazz on the Lawn concerts. Six families were treated to an evening at Winter House—complete with an ornament workshop, s’mores, dinner, and a visit with Santa. Callanwolde established relationships with four new organizations: the DeKalb Community Service Board’s clients with behavioral health needs attended regular dance and painting workshops; Auburn- Atlanta Senior Services’ low-income seniors socialized during a clay workshop; the DeKalb Public Libraries’ volunteers hosted “Storytime” at Winter House; and CaringWorks’ previously homeless adults and families benefited from a variety of workshops and classes.
Jazz on the Lawn celebrated its 24th year and our Spring Concert Series, in its third year, delighted growing audiences. Winter House also celebrated its third year becoming one of Callanwolde’s largest public community engagement events. Thousands of people visited the mansion over nine days enjoying art workshops, concerts, dance performances, artist market, and children’s activities. The new roof on the mansion (funded by DeKalb County) allowed for much needed interior repairs and a fresh coat of paint. The formal gardens, thanks to our Master Gardeners, are stunning. Most visibly, Callanwolde erected a handsome new quartzite sign on Briarcliff Road. On a sad note, Callanwolde lost former Board member, Amanda Kemprowski, in 2023. Amanda served as Treasurer for several years and Board President during the early days of the pandemic. Her dedication to Callanwolde was unsurpassed and she will be missed. I continue to be proud and thankful for the hard work of the Callanwolde Board of Directors, faculty and staff.

Achievements of 2023
ART SCHOLARS CAMP Art Scholars (programming for elementary school children who qualify for Title I support) expanded beyond teacher-workdays to a full week of summer camp for 50 kids. Along with the normal activities of our summer camps, students from Cedar Grove Elementary were treated to a “Jazz Appreciation” workshop hosted by well-known artists Karla Harris and Joe Alterman. ART SCHOLARS & JAZZ ON THE LAWN UNITE Three students from Cedar Grove Elementary took the stage at the Callanwolde Amphitheater with Karla Harris, performing “This Little Light of Mine,” to the delight of the Jazz on the Lawn audience. This experience will have a lasting impact on these eight and nine-year-olds’ lives. HOLIDAY BOARD GALA BREAKS NEW FUNDING RECORD After breaking all fundraising records in 2022, funds raised at our 2023 Holiday Board Gala exceeded $200,000 net. Cedar Grove Elementary Principal Norman Thomas thanked Callanwolde and described the incredible positive impact summer camp had on his students. DeKalb Commissioners Steve Bradshaw, Michelle Long Spears, and Ted Terry each pledged $5,000 to support Callanwolde’s work with underserved communities in DeKalb County. Finally, DeKalb County CEO, Michael Thurmond, surprised everyone with a $50,000 pledge. CREATIVE CAMP FULLY ENROLLED Once again, Callanwolde’s Creative Camp enjoyed full enrollment and waiting lists for all seven weeks. The camp has built a reputation for high-quality arts education for children six through 12. “Little Musicals” was a particularly memorable week as each classroom of students performed along with classic Beatles’ songs. Each week culminated with a student art show enjoyed by campers’ friends and families.
HOWARD FINSTER EXHIBITION Longtime Callanwolde pottery instructor, Jennie Ashcraft Berman, and founding Pottery Director, Rick Berman, loaned their private collection of work by Howard Finster for an exhibition entitled “A Feeling Came Over Me”. Howard’s first “work of art” along with many unique found objects were on display. Having built a close relationship with Mr. Finster as his art dealer, Rick Berman treated guests with fascinating stories of his days at Paradise Gardens. POTTERY WORKSHOPS INTRODUCED Demand for pottery classes continues to outpace availability. With over 200 people on waiting lists for regular classes, our Pottery department introduced one-day workshops to allow greater access to popular activities like throwing on the wheel and Raku. NEW SIGN Thanks in part to Tina Vercelote, owner of PIETRA Luxury in Stone, Callanwolde now has a beautiful new sign on Briarcliff Road. The sign features backlit cast- aluminum lettering mounted on two large quartzite slabs.

TESTIMONIALS FROM 2023 POTTERY STUDENTS
“John is an excellent instructor. He is articulate, very patient, and extremely skilled and creative. He is always willing to listen to students with questions, provide additional demonstrations if requested, and accept input from students. Could not ask for more.” “This was a great course! Well taught.” “I have already recommended these workshops to many people and I’m glad to see that you are adding handbuilding workshops too!” “Doug is a great instructor. Because of his teaching and guidance, I grew as an artist and potter. I felt challenged and always felt that the instructor was available and willing to help.” “Eric is a great teacher. He always comes with a planned demo, lesson, or fun activity. He actively tried to balance the instruction for the variety of skill levels in the room. He is funny, and created a casual and open atmosphere to learn in.”
TESTIMONIAL FROM 2023 WEAVING STUDENT
“Amazing course, amazing instructor! Best part of my week. Teresa is so pumped about weaving and puts so much effort into making sure our weaving dreams come true. I tell all my friends and family about how much I love the class.” TESTIMONIAL FROM 2023 DRAWING & PAINTING STUDENTS “Pat is a wonderful teacher. I especially appreciated all of the time spent on the technique side of painting. This attention to ‘nuts and bolts’ is often missing from other art classes. Those lectures and his demonstrations are well worth the time away from the easel.” “I have now taken two courses with Lorraine. She is an exceptional instructor. She is positive and always encouraging. I think she really cares that her students learn and have a good experience. I hope to take classes from her again in the future.”

TESTIMONIALS FROM 2023 CAMP PARENTS
“Our daughter attends this camp every year, and it’s always her favorite!” “My son really loved this camp. I was impressed with how seriously the instructors took it, giving the kids opportunities to do lots of projects and work with lots of materials (including ones that might be considered a ‘hassle’ and are therefore often avoided in school art classes, at home, etc.) and giving them reason (and teaching them) to take great pride in their work. I hope every class is as great as this one – we’ll be back for more.” “My daughter’s favorite camp! She attended three weeks this summer and loved it.” “Extremely well run. My kids’ favorite camp of the summer!” “My daughter absolutely LOVED your camp! It’s her second year, and she loves the staff and activities. THANK YOU so very much for making it such a positive experience for her and the other children!” “Our child absolutely loved camp – she has enjoyed other camps this year, but this was the first one where she said, ‘I’m sad it’s over!’ We are excited to enroll again next year!” “This is my daughter’s favorite camp every year. She loves going every day and creates the most wonderful art. We love the Callanwolde experience.” “My kids were ecstatic about this camp. I can’t seem to get details from them (shocking), but it clearly exceeded their expectations. From what I can glean from their conversations, the day was extremely well balanced among activities, learning, downtime, sketching, playing, etc.”

TESTIMONIALS FROM ATTENDEES “I love that beside the specific events, it is open just to tour or to meet a friend and introduce them to the beautiful home and grounds.” “I just loved it! I came for the History Tour and was so impressed with the Artist Market that I came back the next weekend bringing folks with me.” “It was wonderful. Holidays are always special for my family and guests when including a visit to Callanwolde!!!” At Winter House’s culmination, the Callanwolde School of Dance presented two dance holiday spectaculars. The youngest dancers partnered with the Atlanta Youth Singers to perform “Wintertide,” much to the delight of the sold-out crowd. The older dancers performed four separate shows of “All Aboard,” a charming original production inspired by “Polar Express” featuring sets, costumes, and high-quality dance. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to our Winter House sponsors whose generous contributions made this event possible: Audi Atlanta, Personal Care, Inc., Tradition Trees, Siegel Insurance, Auto-Owners Insurance, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Dekalb Library Foundation, Faith Flowers, Stems Atlanta, Rhapsody in Bloom, LLL Rentals, DeKalb County Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Affairs, Dekalb Federation of Garden Clubs, and Trellis Horticulture Therapy Alliance. Guests sampled Callanwolde’s educational offerings in mini workshops featuring popular year-round classes such as Pottery Wheel Throwing, Raku Firing, Jewelry Making, Glass Etching, and Blacksmithing. Santa himself made delightful appearances, creating holiday memories with both human and furry companions. Live performances further elevated the festive ambiance, showcasing talents like Joe Gransden and his band, professional pianist Mischa Stefanuk, and the Atlanta Youth Symphony. New community partnerships brought an opportunity to provide more services for underserved communities, including a mini library staffed by the Dekalb Library Association, Sensory Santa appointments for children with special needs, and a memorable holiday experience for families previously unhoused. In its third year, Winter House has become Callanwolde’s largest community engagement event. A vibrant celebration of Callanwolde’s mission infused with art, live performances, warm hospitality, and interactive workshops, Winter House allows visitors a stress-free experience as they sit beside crackling fireplaces in our cozy Wine Bar and Winter Living Room while enjoying classic board games and art projects. Outside, families gathered around fire pits to enjoy s'mores and the beautiful Callanwolde grounds. Throughout the festivities, the Callanwolde atmosphere resonated with lively holiday customs as guests explored our festive artist market, participated in family games, and admired the ambiance of Callanwolde as a family home.

determined that renovated spaces in the Mansion, the Carriage House, and the Conservatory, as well as the addition of two new buildings are the pathway to expand Callanwolde’s programming. Build. Inspire. Grow. is reminiscent of Callanwolde’s rich history—built by one family, inspired by the community, and growing to serve all. The five-year capital campaign, with a goal of $8.5M, was launched in July 2023. One hundred percent of Callanwolde’s Board of Directors and Staff have committed financially to this project. It is no surprise that the organization’s donor base has been incredibly supportive during the silent phase of the campaign. By the end of 2023, we achieved an impressive 32% of the capital campaign goal. Great work is underway as we work towards launching the public phase of the campaign. We anticipate significant support from DeKalb County to help us cross the campaign finish line. A Capital Campaign to Increase Capacity for the premier Community Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
A comprehensive feasibility study for Callanwolde Fine Arts Center’s growth plan was conducted in May 2023. The study concluded that the plan—serving the community in a much larger capacity through renovation and expansion efforts—directly responds to the growing needs of low-income seniors, veterans, adults transitioning out of homelessness, adults with disabilities, and students who qualify for Title I and Title III assistance. The number of dance performances and classes at Callanwolde has grown exponentially during the past 50 years. Heavy dance floors in the historical Mansion are placed down and taken up an average of 51 times a year to accommodate a variety of programming. Additionally, current waiting lists for Callanwolde’s pottery classes exceed 200 students. After months of due diligence in exploring effective and sustainable options to significantly increase community engagement efforts and keep up with demand, Callanwolde leadership

2023 Holiday Board Gala
The success of our 2023 Holiday Gala served as a testament to the support of Callanwolde’s mission to enrich the lives of underserved communities by raising a record-breaking net total of $215,000. These funds will enable us to expand our reach and impact by providing free art classes and art experiences to even more veterans, low-income seniors, students receiving Title I & III assistance, and individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness. A highlight of the evening was Cedar Grove Elementary Principal Norman Thomas's moving testimonial, highlighting the profound impact our inaugural Art Scholars Summer Camp
had on his students' academic and emotional development. We were honored by the generous pledges of support during the event from DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond and DeKalb County Commissioners Michelle Long Spears, Steve Bradshaw, and Ted Terry. None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors, including Audi Atlanta, The Coca- Cola Company, Alston & Bird, Home Depot, Publix Super Markets Charities, Hammersmith, Atlanta Party Rentals, and Faith Flowers.

Callanwolde’s inspiring beauty and services to the community are not to be taken for granted. Left unattended, our seven buildings, amphitheater, working greenhouse and 12-acres of gardens can quickly fall into disrepair. Our concerts and events are attended by thousands of people. Volunteers and in-kind partners play a critical role by providing expertise and helping us to lower our costs.

2023 Callanwolde Volunteer of the Year DAVE GUTMAN
For the fourth year in a row, pottery student, Dave Gutman, was recognized as our Volunteer of the Year. Not only did Dave manage our Greenhouse and Community Garden, but he also oversaw many improvements around Callanwolde’s campus, with the help of staff. Starting with the Kiln Yard, he spearheaded resurfacing of the raku area (reclaiming about three-foot of space on the south and east edge), moved shelving obstructing the exit of the hand
building studio, added underground drainage, created new space to store kiln bricks, and poured a new pad for the raku kiln, with help from Jaime Dutro. He also oversaw many lighting projects which upgraded fixtures to LED in the basement pottery studio and greenhouse. He fixed and stabilized the Pergola and created additional space in the community garden with the help of Cynda Rosenbaum.
