“I would also like to share with you that I am excited about other progress I believe our industry will see hap- pen in 2023. As Chairwoman of AICC, my theme is Better Minds, Better Boxes: Investing in the Future Through Edu- cation. As many of you know, I am very passionate about this. I am excited that AICC and ICPF have rallied behind my theme, and we are going to be aggressive with getting the word out there about our industry to the next genera- tion worker. We have several meetings set up with my lo- cal STEM high school as well as a local two-year technical college in February to discuss how we can get our curricu- lum integrated into some of their courses. Once we figure out what this looks like, we will then have a template to share with you on how to get this going in your own local STEM and tech schools. “In closing, who knows what 2023 will bring, but we are ready to take it on. Cheers to a happy and healthy New Year!” VALLEY CONTAINER Bridgeport, Connecticut: Robert Neidermeier reports, “The past 18 months have been one wild roller coaster ride! All an epic ride at an amusement park. I recall many times throughout 2022 reminding others that these might be the ‘Golden Days’ of demand, but the golden days do not last forever. It is with this mindset that I think about the coming year, 2023. “All the Valley Container-related companies (Fluted Par- tition, Cell Pak, Honey Cell, Honey Cell Midwest and New- Corr) have all seen varying levels of impact from this past year, but all are ready for a slight frost that is coming to temper the red-hot past year in sales. Already we see vol- umes down from customers which, while somewhat sea- sonal, is a marked drop from the past few years. I expect this trend to continue for a bit of time going into the year. My expectation is that the hangover from 2022 will last well into the 2023 with Q3 and Q4 hopefully being more stable than the first two quarters. “Paper supply has finally caught up to demand and if it continues its trajectory, supply will become the domi- nant factor creating more havoc in the industry. We have already read about mills that have delayed starting up and others that have ‘conveniently’ taken unscheduled down- time in an effort to keep level with its economic seesaw partner. Unfortunately, even a slight dip in demand will of us have been dealing with pa- per shortages, raw material delays and machinery backlogs that have not been part of the industry for as long as I can remember. In the blink of an eye, the world came out of a covid induced slump that rebounded with a level of de- mand that was nothing more than Robert Neidermeier
