Diary of an HR Manager
Monday 10.57 a.m. I was in the boardroom with the CEO, waiting for Natalie to arrive and go over the final plan. The CEO was going to address the whole workforce at a nearby conference hall venue, timed for Friday, 30th May at 3.00 p.m., after which work would be finished for the week. At that meeting, the CEO and the MD of the buying business would outline the circumstances surrounding the sale of the business and the decision to relocate the business to Peterborough.
As the HR1 redundancy notification had been sent to the Department of Work & Pensions in mid- April, the next step was to arrange for an employee representative body to be elected. As there were 12 distinct departments in the business, we felt that two from each would be fair. At the all-hands meeting, all would be advised that voting papers would be available from the following Monday, 2nd June. Candidates could notify that they would stand and the voting should be completed by Thursday, 12th June, so that the counts and results would be announced on Friday, the next day.
I would engage some temporary secretarial staff to administer the whole process under Natalie’s supervision. We would then meet with the representative body and give them all the facts and figures. This would involve the new employer transferring them under TUPE. Assuming that there were no major objections, individual statements would be prepared and issued. At that time, those identified for relocation would be given the offer, as would the number of employees offered extension contracts to ‘bed in’ the transition at Peterborough.
