Memory Verse: “Be strong and of a [ good courage . . . for the Lord thy God is with thee” (Josh. 1:9). It is not always easy to obey God’s commandments and to follow His in structions. One day when Jeremiah told his people God’s message to them, he brought trouble upon himself. God told the people that those who stayed in the city where they were would die by the sword, by famine or by pestilence. Those who allowed the enemy to carry them away with the King of Babylon would live. The princes asked the king to have Jeremiah put to death for bringing this message to the people. When the king gave the princes permission to punish Jeremiah, they let him down with cords into a mud-filled dungeon. When one of the king’s Negro serv ants, Ebed-melech, heard what had hap pened to his friend, Jeremiah, he went to the king and said, “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah th'e prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die from hunger in the place where he is.” When the king heard these words, he told Ebed-melech to take thirty men to help him to remove Jeremiafi from the dungeon before he died. So kind was this Negro, that he took old rags with him for Jeremiah to put under the ropes that would pull him out of the mud so that they would not cut into his flesh. How grateful Jeremiah was for this friend of another race whose thought fulness had saved his life! No matter what difficulty it might bring to him, Jeremiah was always will ing to obey the voice of God. Often you may find it hard to be a Christian. Our Lord suffered and was persecuted much because He was willing to obey His Father’s will. Some people believe that after they receive the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, they will never have hardship or trouble. God’s children are promised persecution and suffering until they join Him in heaven. When they become, tired and discouraged, they may rejoice in His never-failing promise. “Be strong and of a good courage . . . for the Lord'thy God is with thee.” SOUL WINNING Even if I were utterly selfish, and had no care for anything but my own hap piness, I would choose if I might, under God, to be a soul-winner; for never did I know perfect, overflowing, unutterable happiness of the purest and most en nobling order till I first heard of one who had found the Saviour through my means. No young mother ever rejoiced over her first-born child, no warrior was so exultant over a hard-won victory. — C. H. Spurgeon. O C T O B E R , 1 9 4 9
