MATING SUGGESTIONS: Victory in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile has often proved a ticket to considerable stallion success, as Uncle Mo, Nyquist and Good Magic have shown in recent years. And there is good reason for thinking that Fierceness, the wide- margin 2023 winner, is well qualified to join this distinguished club. Having been voted Champion 2YO Male by a huge majority, Fierceness continued to shine at three, to the extent that he ranked second to Sierra Leone in the voting for the Eclipse Award for 3YO Male. Although he disappointed when favorite for the Kentucky Derby, Fierceness showcased his talent with victories in the G1 Florida Derby, G2 Jim Dandy S. and G1 Travers S., defeating fellow G1 winners Thorpedo Anna, Sierra Leone and Dornoch in a vintage edition of the latter. Fierceness rounded off his sophomore year with a creditable second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Fierceness has since become one of those admirable performers to have won at G1 level at two, three and four years, thanks to his decisive defeat of triple G1SW Journalism in the Pacific Classic. Although Fierceness has gained his major successes beyond a mile, it mustn’t be forgotten that he also displayed dazzling speed on his debut at two. Tackling 6 furlongs at Saratoga, he recorded fractions of :22.02, :44.65 and 1:09.40, despite being taken in hand in the final 100 yards to win by more than 11 lengths, becoming a TDN Rising Star in the process. Fierceness’ immediate sire line has made a sizeable impact on the Breeders’ Cup. The 2023 Juvenile winner is by City of Light, winner of the 2018 Dirt Mile (and two G1s over 7 furlongs). City of Light’s sire Quality Road also has three other Breeders’ Cup winners to his credit, thanks to Hootenanny (2014 Juvenile Turf), Caledonia Road (2017 Juvenile Fillies) and Corniche (2021 Juvenile). That’s four Breeders’ Cup 2YO winners, which highlights Fierceness’ potential as a sire of classy 2YOs with the ability to train on. Although Quality Road – like Fierceness – won the G1 Florida Derby, he was sufficiently versatile to set a track record for 6½ furlongs in the G2 Amsterdam Stakes later the same year and also took the G1 Metropolitan H. as a 4YO. Fierceness’ eight great-great-grandsires include GONE WEST, DEPUTY MINISTER, A.P. INDY, STORM BIRD and UNBRIDLED , all of whom founded dynasties. As they will all be no closer than the fifth generation of Fierceness’ foals, there is plenty of scope for further lines of these important stallions. Fierceness’ grandsire Quality Road has 26
