Nudgeathon Using behavioural science and design to solve problems together

A powerful tool to untangle complex problems and develop new ideas, Nudgeathon uses the power of ‘crowdsourcing’ to solve problems. From nudging consumer behaviour in financial projects for the Australian Treasury, to strengthening the local economy in Göteborg, Sweden, to encouraging conversations around Prostate Cancer to aid earlier diagnosis, Nudgeathon can be applied to issues in any sector, organisation, or culture. Developed in the Behavioural Science group at Warwick Business School, Nudgeathon aims to produce solutions to major problems within your organisation by drawing on insights and methods from behavioural science, as well as from psychology, economics, design and the performing arts. Providing a safe and fresh space for multiple problem-owners to come together, Nudgeathon enables them to share their own perspectives, develop a shared understanding of the problem, and finally work together to find solutions.

A Nudgeathon is fully tailored to your organisation and could further help you to obtain buy-in to solutions from strategic partners Designing your Nudgeathon Over the six to eight weeks of your Nudgeathon project, the team at WBS will: ■ Conduct sessions with your team to develop a behavioural map – identifying detailed target behaviours and agreeing on the outcomes that you are looking to achieve ■ Conduct a work-based personal learning exercise to prioritise the key target behaviours ■ Identify and recruit relevant stakeholders to be involved in the Nudgeathon ■ Work with you to develop the problem brief ■ Recruit team members through interviews and focus groups.

“We needed a space where people with different backgrounds could think together towards solving a behavioural problem, and the Nudgeathon seemed to us like the best fit for this.” Jimena Llopis Abella Behavioural Scientist, World Bank

“Bringing together stakeholders to learn about the field of behavioural economics was eye-opening for our attendees. We also found that using the MINDSPACE framework within groups in a competitive environment helped to generate feasible and exciting solutions. We were fortunate to publish our experience of the Nudgeathonin an international peer-reviewed journal and we have subsequently secured further funding to implement the solutions that emerged from the Nudgeathon event.”

“Complex problems exist because there are no easy solutions and they cannot be fixed through a single tool. Leveraging the power of diversity, expert insights, insider knowledge and open group interactions, Nudgeathon equips you to solve these problems. We work deep with organisations over a span of six to eight weeks to build capability, create new ideas and stress test them.” Umar Taj Umar Taj, Co-founder of Nudgeathon and Associate Professor of Behavioural Science
