This week our Year 12 students enjoyed a very busy Enrichment Week the focus of which has been on next steps. Students learned in depth about both university applications and apprenticeships. We were delighted to have welcomed a range of speakers which included the National Physics Laboratory, Unilever, BP and a

variety of different medical professionals. A valuable presentation on student finance was included in the insight day at St Mary’s University. Today the students are enjoying ending the week with a trip to Thorpe Park. On Wednesday we hosted our Year 11 Art Exhibition and it was fabulous to see the students’ final pieces, showcasing their creativity and technical expertise. The wide range of work on display which included landscape and portrait paintings, clay sculpture and mixed media pieces was of an exceptional standard. On Thursday 8EFR hosted a Mad Hatters’ Tea Party to raise funds for Cancer Research. It was fabulous to see the hall full of students having fun and enjoying homemade treats. The fun will continue next week with another cake sale on Tuesday. Next week we will be having our traditional Year 11 Final Celebration Assembly with families on Wednesday morning so students in Year 7-10 and Year 12 should not come to school before 11.15am. I look forward to sharing details of all the events next week. We will also be sharing live content on our Instagram page @waldegraveschool. I hope that everyone enjoys the bank holiday weekend, particularly as there is the prospect of some improvements in the weather. HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Kathy Jaloussis, one of our school counsellors, has been working closely with Years 7 and 8 running workshops on wellbeing topics, such as friendship and anti-bullying. The workshop thinks about the stages and changes in friendship groups, using Bruce Tuckman’s model of group development as a guide, giving the message that group changes are not a one-way street and may go back and forth. The workshop ends with thinking about tips that can be used when friendship issues arise. Marshall Rosenberg’s model of non-violent communication is used to help students focus on honestly expressing feelings and needs to someone, and being able to empathetically listen to theirs. The model can be helpful in any type of relationship and is based on the four components: observations, feelings, needs and requests. These short videos explain the concept and components. This one is useful for parents and this one can be shared with children.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13
The Year 13 exams have now officially started. The Photography and the first group of the Fashion and Textiles students have now completed their exams. I am confident they have done really well. I went to see what they produced on Wednesday afternoon and I was really impressed with the amount of effort that had gone into their final pieces.
Today, our Art students, as well as the second group of Textiles students were taken off timetable, in order for them to effectively prepare for their 3-day exam due to start on Tuesday.
Looking forward we must make mention of the Bank Holiday on Monday 6 May. The school will not be open to students. I hope students have a nice rest over the extended weekend.
Furthermore, between Wednesday and Friday next week, the MFL students will complete their oral exams. I would really like to wish everyone sitting exams the best of luck. I can’t wait to see what the Art and Textile students have produced on Thursday afternoon.
Finally, the last day when Year 13 students have to be in lessons is going to be on Friday 10 May. There will be a small celebration at breaktime. The main leavers’ event will take place on Friday 21 June, but more details will be shared with the students, as well as their parents and carers in due course.

South Western Railway confirms services during May’s industrial action: “We have confirmed the services we will be able to operate during an upcoming week of industrial action affecting our network. This includes an overtime ban for members of the ASLEF union from Monday 6 to Saturday 11 May and a full day of strike action on Tuesday 7 May. Strike action will impact other train operators on different days during the industrial action period. Customers are advised to check their whole journey before travelling between Monday 6 and Saturday 11 May. South Western Railway confirms services during May’s industrial action On Monday 6 May, the Early May Bank Holiday, a revised service will run due to both industrial action by the ASLEF union and engineering work in the Aldershot, Reading, Salisbury and Winchester areas On Tuesday 7 May, a significantly reduced service will run on a limited number of lines due to strike action, with large parts of the network closed From Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 May, a revised service will again run due to industrial action On Saturday 11 May, engineering work in the Ascot, Ash and Havant areas will mean further service changes SOUTH Western Railway (SWR) has confirmed its services during industrial action from Monday 6 to Saturday 11 May. On Monday 6 May, the Early May Bank Holiday, a revised service will operate across the SWR network due to a ban on overtime working by the ASLEF union. Engineering work will also take place with line closures in the Aldershot, Reading, Salisbury and Winchester areas leading to further service changes. Customers should check before travelling. Journey planners expected to be up to date on Wednesday 1 May. On Tuesday 7 May, a significantly reduced service will run on a limited number of lines due to strike action by the ASLEF union. There will be no services to stations such as Southampton Central, Portsmouth Harbour, Windsor & Eton River- side, Reading or Exeter St Davids. There will also be no service on the Island Line.
Trains will only run between 0700 and 1900. There will be no services outside of these times.
Customers are advised to only travel if their journeys are absolutely necessary. If customers must travel, they should check before they travel using journey planners, which are expected to be up to date on Tuesday 30 April. From Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 May, the overtime ban will again mean a revised service across the SWR net - work. Engineering work will also take place on Saturday 11, with a line closure between Ascot and Reading and altered train services in the Ash and Havant areas. Customers should check before travelling. Journey planners for Wednesday 8 through to Saturday 11 are expected to be up to date on Saturday 4 May.
