Converter Outlook, Part II: Insights From The West Coast BY ASHLEY PRAZYCH The ability to adapt has always been one of the corrugated industry’s strengths. Year after year, box makers adjust to shifting conditions, bal- ancing caution with opportunity as they work through forces largely outside their control. The year ahead looks no different. Cost pressures remain top of mind, tariffs continue to influence planning, and the cur-

rent political landscape adds another layer of uncertainty. At the same time, conversations around artificial intelligence are becoming more common, prompting questions not just about what is possible, but what is practical. In Part II of our annual Converter Outlook, two indepen- dent West Coast box makers share how they are approaching the year ahead. Their outlooks reflect a measured, experience-driven mindset shaped by real operating conditions rather than short-term trends. THE BAY CITIES Pico Rivera, California: Greg Tucker reports, “Where, oh where will we grow? Last outlook I posted was a demonstration of history, which helped form my opinion (or guess) as to what would happen in the world of boxes. I thought things would be bumpy in the first half of 2025 and we would get our footing and start to get back to normalized growth. This last year was met with the buzzword of ‘uncertainty.’ “After the hopes and dreams of the Orange Marshmallow coming in for a second round, we thought we would see immediate reductions in regulations, taxes and a spike in business activities. This time around the Orange Marshmallow thought through exactly how to maneuver through a very dirty dust-filled system of the ‘deep state’ and drive a CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Turn Trim Waste into Revenue One Size Never Fits All G.F. Puhl Designs Scrap Systems to Meet YOUR Needs
Our customers have various needs for scrap and dust collection systems based on several factors including building layout, available space for the equipment, distance conveyed, local codes for noise and height as well as air permitting and available operating and maintenance staff. Change the game with a custom-designed system by G.F. Puhl. It can make all the difference. When it comes to trim collection systems, there’s virtually no problem we haven’t solved.
Problem: No room for a scrap system inside the building. Solution: If your building footprint won’t support additional trim waste equipment, go outdoors. Exterior systems like an above-roof or ground-level concentrator will boost your capacity. Problem: No way to monitor the system unless you’re on site. Solution: G.F. Puhl leads the pack with proprietary technology that makes it possible to monitor the system from wherever you are. Request PLC touch screen controls with real-time pressure balancing and real-time remote via your smart phone or computer. G.F. Puhl’s expert engineering team has more than 50 years of combined experience designing, fabricating installing, and commissioning trim and dust collection systems of every kind, including outdoor systems with dual compactors, above roof systems with single or multiple cyclones and balers and below roof screen separator systems. If you’re looking for a vendor that can help you solve the scrap collection puzzle once and for all, contact G.F. Puhl today. 615.230.9500 or sales@gfpuhl.com
Problem: No space for a baler room. No budget for baler room staff. Solution: Try outdoor auger compactors requiring minimal operator interaction. Auger compactors achieve higher compaction than conventional ram compactors with less maintenance and no hydraulic fluid. Dual compactor systems allow continuous running while the waste hauler is changing out the container. Problem: No budget for a new system. Solution: Request a custom system with remanufactured equipment. G.F. Puhl sells remanufactured balers, blowers, separators, filters, and more. The savings can be significant and the warranty adds peace of mind. Problem: Your existing system doesn’t meet codes and the inspector has notified you of a problem with the existing system. Solution: G.F. Puhl’s NFPA trained engineering team designs NFPA and OSHA compliant systems that are as safe as they are durable. Problem: Dust is out of control. Solution: G.F. Puhl systems are designed to minimize the hazards created by ambient dust. Dust briquetters, certified explosion isolation valves, flame front diverters, and other safety features maximize safety.

Buckeye Corrugated Expands West With New 100K Square Foot Facility In Reno, Nevada Buckeye Corrugated’s 100,000-square-foot corrugated packaging, man- ufacturing and distribution facility at Airway Commerce Center in Reno is the nearly 70-year-old company’s first venture west of the Rocky Moun- tains. It’s also BCI’s first all-new facility, since growth traditionally has come through strategic acquisitions. Buckeye Corrugated’s focus has predominantly been serving mar- kets in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest, said Adam Williams, BCI’s area vice president. The company headquartered at Fairlawn, Ohio, now has 12 divisions with the opening of its first western-region facility.
• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology
Although the Reno facility is Buckeye’s first entirely new corrugated production facility, the company has extensive experience in setting up and improving operations, said Williams. “One thing we do very well as a company is catering our business to the market,” he said. “Some of our plants are smaller, while some are much larger — it just depends on the market. “We are starting out with 100,000 square feet, and equipment orders are being placed right now,” he added. With lead times ranging from six to 12 months, BCI’s Northern Nevada facility will start out as a distribution center before moving into corru- gated manufacturing. Initially, the company expects to hire five ware- house employees, but that will change once it begins producing corru- gated packaging, Williams said. Production equipment typically requires three-person crews to operate, and BCI expects to employ between 20 and 25 production workers at full ramp up. “We are optimistic that we will be producing out of here before the third quarter of 2026,” Williams said. “When we make an acquisition, we usually make some changes to get operations running a little tighter and grow sales. We’ve done that with our plants in Houston, Texas; Wooster, Ohio; Greenville, South Carolina; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Knoxville, Ten- nessee; and Cedar Falls, Iowa. “We know how to lay out facilities for efficiency and safety. We have gotten good at that piece of it. The biggest challenge is the top line – when you acquire a company, you acquire a book of business. We have to grow sales out here, so we have brought on a few account executives who are familiar with the Reno market, and we are hitting that pretty hard right now.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

brown boxes, while others focus on high-end graphics, packaging assembly, and product fulfillment. The Reno facility will likely have a blend of all functions. The main challenge now that the ink on the lease is dry, Fuselier said, is scaling revenue.
Buckeye had been serving a handful of customers in Northern Nevada and Northern California for several years, added Scott Fuselier, BCI’s vice president of en- terprise sales. When BCI began scouting western region markets, it quickly became apparent that there was an opportunity to grow revenue by serving the companies in Northern Nevada’s burgeoning manufacturing sector, as well as businesses in the neighboring Golden State. “One reason we chose Reno is from a regulatory stand- point, but once we started exploring Reno, we found that there isn’t a corrugated packaging manufacturer here,” Fuselier said. “When we started this process a year ago, we connected with EDAWN, and they introduced us to many local manufacturers. Our sales pitch for the last year has been, ‘How would you feel about a local corrugated manufacturer?’ The reception was that this market is starv- ing for a local corrugated manufacturer.” BCI targeted multiple competing markets – Salt Lake City, Boise, Phoenix, Las Vegas – before settling on North- ern Nevada, Fuselier added. BCI also looked at multiple submarkets within Greater Reno-Sparks and considered quite a few variables before selecting the airport submar- ket primarily due to its proximity to Reno’s workforce ver- sus other submarkets, Fuselier said. Buckeye Corrugated makes custom corrugated pack- aging and displays. Some of its plants focus on simple
“It’s now about how quickly we can get business from Reno and Northern Nevada on the books,” he said. As an employee-owned company, employees are eli- gible to participate in BCI’s stock ownership program. BCI also has a plant profitability bonus program. “Those things are a big part of our culture and ensure everyone has skin in the game and is driving in the same direction,” Williams said. “There are a lot of benefits to working for our company. We want to make sure we are bringing in people that work hard, have a good attitude and come to work every day. We work hard, but we have fun because we enjoy what we do.”

Domtar Employee Receives 2025 Women in Forestry Award According to an announcement on Fort Mill, South Caroli- na based Domtar’s website, Marie-Noëlle Watts, has been honored with the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC)’s 2025 Women in Forestry Award for her strong commitment to operations excellence and environmental stewardship. A proponent of intrapreneurship, she coach- es staff to take a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
Precision Anilox & Glue Roll Technology
Marie-Noëlle Watts
Watts is a prime example of strong leadership through authenticity. As general manager of our Dolbeau paper mill since 2021, she oversaw an operation employing 150 peo- ple producing 140,000 metric tons of specialty paper per year. In December 2024, she brought that same hands-on leadership style to her new role as General Manager of our Saint-Félicien, Quebec, kraft pulp mill, which employs 250 people and produces 357,000 metric tons of North- ern Bleached Softwood Kraft Pulp (NBSK) annually. After studying chemical engineering, Watts began her career at Resolute, a predecessor company of Domtar, in 2006. She worked as an environmental coordinator, spe- cializing in resolving issues with the Dolbeau Mill’s water treatment process. Curiosity led her to take on various other leadership roles in paper and later pulp production, notably helping to restart the Dolbeau Mill in 2012 after a three-year closure. The move from paper to pulp has been an interesting step in her career. Pulp and paper making are complex, continuous processes. “I compare them to a game of dom- inoes,” she explains. “If one element goes down, the ef- fects are felt throughout the rest of the mill. You have to put each piece back carefully in its place.” While new challenges drive Watts to expand her knowl- edge, her diverse practical experience still informs her decision-making. For example, her background in water treatment uniquely positions her to understand the nuanc- es of environmental regulations. As a mill manager, Watts transcends her specialist or- igins, taking a more general view of production as she oversees every aspect, from mechanics to financial and human resources management. She can often be seen

around the mill, listening to employees and making sure everyone is ‘singing from the same songbook.’ This high level of coordination is necessary in a mill running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A native of the Gaspésie region, Watts values strong, vibrant regions. It’s a commitment she brings to her tight- knit adoptive community of Lac-Saint-Jean. She believes companies should play a visible role in their communities, whether through civic action, politics or philanthropy. Marie-Noëlle plays an active role on a local economic council, and previously she served in the Dol- beau-Mistassini Chamber of Commerce. While the Saint-Félicien mill is among the region’s larg- est employers, those on the outside rarely get a glimpse of life within its walls. In-person touchpoints like open hous- es and student internship opportunities help the team feel connected to their community while allowing local people (including potential employees) to get a feel for the mill’s culture. “We have a lot of fun here,” says Watts. “But peo- ple don’t usually get to see us. So, we like to open our doors and show what it’s like.” Community involvement also demystifies the forest- ry industry, particularly for girls and women who may not have otherwise considered careers in the traditionally male-dominated sector. Watts sees the forest products in- dustry as ripe with potential, offering a truly diverse variety of exciting career paths. “We offer well-paying jobs and a great quality of life,” explains Watts, who notes that when potential employees see women like her in leadership roles, it sends a strong message. “With representation, people can imagine what’s possible.”

program built on speed so much so the dirt had no where to go but to be blown away into a desert far away. “I know this firsthand as I come from the ‘Peoples Re-
public of California.” I define my- self as an independent centrist who is a serial entrepreneurial capitalist that does believe we have to help those who can’t help themselves but not those that choose not to help themselves. However, the will of the Ameri- can people swung in the direction from Communism towards Nation-

alism based on strength in the growth of entrepreneurial capitalism, which we were led towards putting America first and building our country to help us first, then look to help were we could elsewhere. “This is extremely important to understand as we have some of the biggest opportunities in 2026 to develop as a country and as an industry. Our entrepreneurial abilities will take advantage of less taxes and less regulation, re- sulting in more success in enjoying than freedom. Just think, the middle class of our country will receive an extra $2,000 a year just by the tax relief we will see. That, in turn is typically consumed partially at retail which requires a box to get to market. “The next segment of this ‘America First’ agenda will be the realization of deregulation. We will soon be unshack- led to drive American businesses towards success without the need of costly oversight and worthless blockades of business. This stifled last year as we attempted to level the playing field so we could compete with the rest of the world. This was done with the use of tariffs, which creat- ed uncertainty in business, in America and the world for that matter. Like them or not, they will be enacted. What is interesting to me is that they have not driven average inflation up so much as we have been misled to believe. “This next year we will see our GDP rise over 3.5 per- cent. Tax reductions and deregulations will drive the num- ber higher. Foreign investments in the U.S. are predicted to be well over 10 trillion dollars. AI, Agentic AI and Pow- er BI are all going to help us do things better, faster, and cheaper. This will be the footing of driving our efficiencies up. Everyone is concerned about the aging out of workers and the reduction of illegals floating across our borders. The innovations in AI will definitely help reduce the need for so many entry level jobs. Why is no one talking about that? By the way, if you are not all in with AI and the likes you will be toast in the near future. “We are awash in paper and our industry, at a great cost, is rationalizing that imbalance by shutting down mills and closing converting operations that are inefficient. This discipline of the Integrated sector of our industry is amaz- ing. I firmly believe that we need to get paid for these cost-

which undoubtedly will result in more box use due to the consumer driving consumption of goods. On that note, next year we will see two big occurrences that will help spur commerce. We will be hosting the World Cup next year and some say that drives more value than even the Olympics. More visitors will be here eating and drinking our new high-protein snacks and drinks! Secondly, this next Fourth of July we will be celebrating 250 years of America’s freedom. This will be a boom for consumerism, of which the by-product is more boxes. “This year will be a great one for retailers. The studios have blockbusters lined up throughout the year, which will help drive licensed product sales, which in turn drive high graphics on and off the shelves. Retail will be working even harder to get shoppers into the stores. Ecommerce will continue to erode brick and mortar. However, driving the customer experience is done no better than with high graphic packaging and point of purchase displays. The store of the future will be a destination and our industry will be the beneficiary of the drive towards enhanced ven- ues. “I am super excited about being part of this industry next year. We will start a little bumpy as we move past tax time and by the Fourth of July things will be cranking. After all, it’s a midterm election year and those in power want to stay in power, thus Americans will have some extra cash to put into their pocket to spend on goods.
ly moves towards rebalancing. I can assure you we will see a price increase in linerboard coming soon to help with those costs. “Other headwinds are the reduction of boxes being used in the e-commerce world. We are seeing them being replaced with paper envelopes. The idea of ‘ships in its own container’ is a great idea however, we will be inviting the “Porch Pirates” back as they will be able to see the value of the gifts laying on our front porch and act accord- ingly. Another headwind is the increase in the use of RPCs. They warned us and I feel we didn’t react fast enough by redesigning the corrugated produce box so robots can pick them up without smashing the delicate produce in- side. We have thousands of designers that can redesign the footprint of a produce box and chase the dirty RPCs into extinction. We can do this! “The most interesting headwind is our ‘fat pill’ GLP-1. America is fatter than hell and we are tricking our bod- ies into being skinny by over injecting GLP-1 drugs into our bodies. That casualty other than those who overdose themselves is the reduction of snack food consumption. I think the flip side will be, and already is, the development of high protein snack foods and drinks that we will gobble up. The need for boxes will be compensated some with this headwind. “Tax Policy and deregulation will spur growth next year,

“We will see the continuation of our elders retiring in big numbers in our industry. News alert! AI can help there with not only efficiency gains but retraining many in our companies and documenting our ‘tribal knowledge.’ We will learn to do more with less as we reposition our em- ployees to be front and center with our clients to build on customer retention and customer acquisition. We will have to retrain many in our industry next year and in the coming years. “There is nothing like the ICPF to help us drive youth into our companies. This foundation is doing more than it ever has to drive entrants into our industry. The new lead- ership there is phenomenal! The best thing everyone can do for our industry is to write some big fat checks to the ICPF so it can help support all of our growth. “Happy New Year! the pressure back on paper mills and their customers to stay flexible, control costs, and execute cleanly. They don’t need a hammer, but a scalpel for changes. “Unfortunately, manufacturing is still loaded down with yesterday’s promises. Durable goods sales remain sluggish and order patterns are choppy. Instead of stock- ing up, many customers are choosing to run lean, which means choosing to sell out inventory rather than sell it off. Plants with financial discipline adjust quickly without burn- ing margin will have the advantage. When demand finally firms up later in 2026 or into 2027, those operations will be ready to grow their brands. “U.S. trade policy continues to make life more compli- cated than in needs to be. Tariffs haven’t stopped com- merce, but they added capital costs—especially for an industry that depends on imported machinery, parts, and new technology. For box plants and mills, that means high- er investment costs and longer payback periods. “Tariffs don’t magically bring manufacturing jobs back, they mostly just reshuffle who pays the bill. In response, companies are focusing harder on productivity, supplier relationships, and squeezing more out of existing equip- ment. A government that has protectionist tariffs in re- sponse to avoiding a recession makes the same mistake
