SUSTAINABILITY Innovation Will Continue To Reshape Packaging Landscape The intersection of sustainability and innovation is reshaping the packaging landscape. As we move into 2026, brands are embracing eco-friendly pack- aging trends while integrating smart technologies to meet the growing demand for environmental re- sponsibility and enhanced consumer engagement. Let’s explore how this synergy is setting the stage for a greener, smarter future in packaging. Eco-conscious consumers are no longer sat- isfied with traditional packaging solutions. They want materials that are not only sustainable but also functional and interactive. In response, brands are turning to biodegradable materials such as plant-based plastics, mushroom myceli- um, and even seaweed-based films. Material Pairing The real game-changer? Pairing these mate- rials with smart technologies like NFC tags, QR codes, and sensors. Imagine a compostable cof- fee cup embedded with a QR code that tells you where the beans were sourced, how to recycle the cup, and offers a discount for your next pur- chase. This fusion of sustainability and interactiv- ity is redefining the customer experience while reducing environmental impact. Transparency has become a non-negotiable expectation in today’s market. Consumers want to know the story behind the products they pur- chase, and packaging is a powerful medium for delivering that story. Smart packaging enables brands to provide real-time data about a product’s lifecycle. For instance, a connected wine bottle can inform consumers about the vineyard it came from, the vintage year, and even offer food pairing sugges- tions. Meanwhile, sustainability-focused brands are leveraging these technologies to share car- bon footprint data, ethical sourcing practices, and recycling instructions. This level of openness not only builds trust but also positions brands as leaders in sustainability and innovation, resonating deeply with eco-con- scious consumers. Combining sustainability with smart packaging offers unparalleled benefits for both brands and consumers, such as enhanced brand loyalty; im- proved consumer engagement; regulatory Com- pliance; and environmental impact.

decision was his membership of the judging panel for the Global Flexo Innovation Awards in 2019 and 2021. “I saw first-hand the benefits that trade shops and con- verters were gaining from FLEXCEL NX Technology,” he said. “Our company slogan is ‘All Options, The Best Solu- tions’, and I realized this was a solution we absolutely had to offer our customers in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. After Miraclon introduced PureFlexo Printing and when I saw the print and process quality this technology enables, I thought ‘That’s it. Let’s start!’. It couldn’t have been soon enough.”

Fotograbados Longo was founded in 1938 by Sebas- tian’s grandfather Alfonso, initially providing zinc plates for letterpress. Under his father Rodolfo, the company was a player in the development of the Argentinean flexography industry during the 1980s and 1990s and is now a major player in wide web flexible packaging prepress. Fotograbados Longo provides a full prepress service, from packaging design to plate imaging. The company works very closely with both converters and brands to provide tailored solutions for each job. Explains Sebastian: “At the start of a new project we meet with the design- ers, the brand and the converter. Our role is to say what is possible, and what isn’t,” said Sebastian. “If necessary, we take the design apart and rebuild it from the color sepa- ration stage, so that everyone involved understands what we’re proposing. Since introducing FLEXCEL NX plates with PureFlexo Printing, we’ve had customers comment- ing on the increase in plate stability and ink control they’ve experienced during a print run, which is much better than what they thought was possible.” With PureFlexo Printing in Fotograbados Longo’s ‘tool- box’ the company can now “confidently offer customers the option of fixed color palette (FCP) printing, and the massive production, efficiency and cost saving benefits that come along with it,” said Sebastian. PureFlexo Printing, available through FLEXCEL NX Print Suite for Flexible Packaging, utilizes triple-form plate sur- face patterning to resist ink spread during printing, which is said to lower dot gain and significantly reducing ink build-up.
