variety of different medical professionals. A valuable presentation on student finance was included in the insight day at St Mary’s University. Today the students are enjoying ending the week with a trip to Thorpe Park. On Wednesday we hosted our Year 11 Art Exhibition and it was fabulous to see the students’ final pieces, showcasing their creativity and technical expertise. The wide range of work on display which included landscape and portrait paintings, clay sculpture and mixed media pieces was of an exceptional standard. On Thursday 8EFR hosted a Mad Hatters’ Tea Party to raise funds for Cancer Research. It was fabulous to see the hall full of students having fun and enjoying homemade treats. The fun will continue next week with another cake sale on Tuesday. Next week we will be having our traditional Year 11 Final Celebration Assembly with families on Wednesday morning so students in Year 7-10 and Year 12 should not come to school before 11.15am. I look forward to sharing details of all the events next week. We will also be sharing live content on our Instagram page @waldegraveschool. I hope that everyone enjoys the bank holiday weekend, particularly as there is the prospect of some improvements in the weather. Please note that there will be disruption to train services next week, see the end of the bulletin for further details.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Kathy Jaloussis, one of our school counsellors, has been working closely with Years 7 and 8 running workshops on wellbeing topics, such as friendship and anti-bullying. The workshop thinks about the stages and changes in friendship groups, using Bruce Tuckman’s model of group development as a guide, giving the message that group changes are not a one-way street and may go back and forth. The workshop ends with thinking about tips that can be used when friendship issues arise. Marshall Rosenberg’s model of non-violent communication is used to help students focus on honestly expressing feelings and needs to someone, and being able to empathetically listen to theirs. The model can be helpful in any type of relationship and is based on the four components: observations, feelings, needs and requests. These short videos explain the concept and components. This one is useful for parents and this one can be shared with children.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8
A well done is in order for all the Year 8s that took part in the RE Buddhist Trip. With our last group having attended this Tuesday, it was great to hear such positive feedback from the staff. The leaders of the RE trip all stated that the students were very well behaved and their attitude to the learning was exemplary. It was warming to hear that the students took the trip very seriously and asked a number of questions showing strong interest in the Buddhist way of life. Thank you to all the staff involved in the trip, I know the students were very appreciative. This week I delivered an assembly about online safety. The digital world has been a theme of our assemblies this calendar year as both Mr Isted and Ms Tongue have looked at topics that relate to students interacting with the online space. The presentation focused on the rules surrounding the sharing of images as well as the digital footprint we all leave. We discussed how once something is out online, it becomes out of our control. As always I encourage parents to speak to their children about these issues, they are good conversations to have as they are issues that do affect children and adults. A very big congratulations must go towards 8EFR and their recent charity work. They have been great role models and were able to organise a fundraising day. They showed great leadership and organised a range of fun events for the Year 7s to get involved in. I was very impressed by the number of cake sales that were provided and sold by the students. A big thank you to Ms French for organising this event amidst a busy week. It is also worth mentioning the wonderful art exhibition that took place on Tuesday at the end of the day. I saw a few Year 8s attend the event as they viewed the incredible work of the Year 11 Art classes. I hope it inspired many future artists in Year 8 to consider the subject for GCSE. Looking forward we must make mention of the Bank holiday on Monday 6 May. The school will not be open to students. I hope students have a nice rest over the extended weekend. Also parents are reminded that on Wednesday 7 May students should not come in for P1 and P2 as we will be hosting our Year 11 leavers assembly and saying our final goodbyes before they go on study leave. Students are therefore expected to arrive during break time, ready for P3.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

This book follows the story of a young President Snow (or Corialanus Snow, as he is called in the book). The story features the 11th Hunger games and focuses on the surprising talent of District 12’s tribute, Lucy Gray. If you like the dystopian genre and lots of action, this book is a ‘must read’! To me, the themes of friendship and betrayal were very strongly portrayed. I liked how the story progressed and the very shocking ending really stayed with me. With the release of the movie last year you can watch it, too! ~ Recommended by Ada (7PUN)
