A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7

In form time this week, Year 7 have shared the benefit for their expertise with Year 6 students by writing letters giving advice and welcoming next year’s cohort to the Waldegrave community. Our ‘Friendship’ workshops continue with 7EST working with school counsellor Kathy Jaloussis. The sessions aim to equip our students with the skills required to navigate some tricky peer relationship issues and they have benefited our students greatly. Congratulations to 7SHU for having the best attendance over the last half term! They were rewarded with a pizza party at the start of last week as their prize. The next pizza party will be awarded to the class that shows the most improved attendance. 7EST, 7FFR and 7PIR have been this week’s star performers on the house point scale. Well done everybody! I am often asked how parents and carers can support their child’s learning. Some ‘quick wins’ are to discuss the day’s learning with your child and help them get organised for the next day with fully charged chromebooks and prepared school bag, uniform and lanyard. The school website shows the topics that students cover over the academic year and discussing this with your child will be of mutual benefit. Year 7 subject progress data is being compiled and will be released soon for you to discuss with your child. As you will be aware, we are simplifying our uniform for the next academic year. Information about this was sent out this week. Please can I ask you to support us in maintaining high standards of uniform by ensuring that your child is not wearing any makeup (such as mascara). Jewellery other than stud earrings is not permitted so please do not allow your child to wear rings or bracelets. A necklace may be worn provided it is not visible. It is fine for students to wear trousers but these should be school trousers and not ‘fashion trousers’ ie. no stretch fabric or flared bottoms. Year 7 continue to display an excellent standard of uniform and so many thanks for your ongoing support with this issue. Looking forward we must make mention of the Bank holiday on Monday 6 May. The school will not be open to students. I hope students have a nice rest over the extended weekend. Also parents are reminded that on Wednesday 7 May students should not come in for P1 and P2 as we will be hosting our Year 11 leavers assembly and saying our final goodbyes before they go on study leave. Students are therefore expected to arrive during break time, ready for P3.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ by Suzanne Collins The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the prequel to the popular Hunger games series. This book follows the story of a young President Snow (or Corialanus Snow, as he is called in the book). The story features the 11th Hunger games and focuses on the surprising talent of District 12’s tribute, Lucy Gray. If you like the dystopian genre and lots of action, this book is a ‘must read’! To me, the themes of friendship and betrayal were very strongly portrayed. I liked how the story progressed and the very shocking ending really stayed with me. With the release of the movie last year you can watch it, too! ~ Recommended by Ada (7PUN) Please contact us with any queries or problems you may have.
