THE ROLE

Job Title Estates Director Reports to Chief Operating Officer (Colette O’Shea)

Core accountabilities

Role purpose and primary objective: The Wellcome Genome Campus (“WGC” or the “Campus”) is a leading genomic research campus and home to the Wellcome Sanger Institute (“Sanger”) and the European Bioinformatics Institute (“EBI”). Sanger is Wellcome’s largest charitable initiative, having founded and funded the Campus and Sanger since 1992. Today, over 2,500 people work at the WGC that comprises c.1,000,000 square feet of research space in Hinxton, 9 miles south of Cambridge. A major expansion of the WGC is underway with planning consent obtained in 2021 for 150,000 square metres or c.1.6 million square feet of gross research and development space (laboratories and offices) primarily to be used for genomics and bioinformatics related activities, which are already core to the Campus. The planning consent also provides for 335,000 square feet of supporting uses (nursery, conference centre, health club, hotel etc.) and 1,500 homes. The expansion is expected to take 10-15 years to fully develop with the first buildings delivered in Phase 1 of the development to become income generating in 2-3 years’ time.

The expansion is to be a commercial, return- seeking, investment for Wellcome from its endowment that is managed by its Investment Division. It is being delivered by Urban&Civic, the development company owned by Wellcome and an in-house Campus management company, Wellcome Genome Campus Ltd (“WGCL”) will be responsible for the Campus’ property management and infrastructure for the whole Campus. The role is accountable for all aspects of the Estate Management of the buildings, grounds and services within Wellcome Genome Campus Ltd, and for the development of the Estate Management plan for the new development. The role provides direct access to WGCL’s C-suite, and an unprecedented opportunity to shape the existing campus and the future phases. We are looking for someone who can work at both the strategic and operational level, and someone who can work in a startup environment and contribute to its growth in the early stages.
