A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11
Last Friday a group of Year 11 scientists visited the Dominion Theatre to hear talks from 6 eminent scientists and a GCSE examiner. They were fascinated to learn about materials science from Dr Jessica Wade and Dr Eleonora D’Elia from Imperial College, the development of IVF treatments from Prof. Robert Winston, Astrophysics and Cosmology from Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Genetics and Environment from Prof. Steve Jones and the Chemistry of Beets from Prof. Andrea Sella. Students also picked up some top tips for their exams from a chief examiner. As we prepare our students for the future, it is important to show them all the paths available to them. One avenue which is often overlooked in schools, is the world of apprenticeships. It was therefore a delight for our Year 11 students to attend an assembly delivered by Isabelle Gray and Tayyaba Arif, apprentices at Cisco, at the start of the week. Isabella and Tayyabe explained to our students why they chose to go down this route and what they would have liked to know about apprenticeships at their age. Their experience at Cisco really helped answer the questions our students had and prepared them to explore this path in the future. On Monday the Music department hosted an Ensemble Workshop Day for our Year 11 Music students. They all worked hard to bring together their GCSE ensembles for the first time. To close the day, the students took part in an informal sharing experience in the hall to perfect their performance skills. Also on Monday, we had our GCSE P.E. students participate in a Football practical assessment with students from Hampton High. Well done to everyone who was a part of this. Well done to the top 3 tutor groups who have been awarded the following epraise points this week: 1st place 11SAS with 47 points, 2nd place 11PGC with 32, and 3rd place 11ESU with 26 points. Congratulations also goes to the following students who are the Year 11 individual top 3 leaders - in 1st place we have Evie Y in 11SAS, 2nd place goes to Kate W in 11PON, and taking the 3rd spot is Amelia M in 11SAS. Today a number of students have spent the day at St. Augustine’s Church where they are busy rehearsing for the Carol Concert taking place later tonight. We hope everyone has a lovely evening at this event. Next week will be a festive one for our students, with the Christmas lunch taking place on Wednesday 13 December for KS4. Please note that if your child does not wish to partake in the Christmas lunch on this day, they should purchase food at break instead. Then, on Thursday 14 December, students have the opportunity to wear a Christmas jumper over their uniform in place of the usual school jumper. Students and their families are kindly requested to make a donation either via ParentPay or our JustGiving page, with all proceeds going to Save the Children.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Heather Morris “I tattooed her number on her left hand, and she tattooed her number in my heart,” The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a true story which follows a Slovakian Jew who was imprisoned in the concentration camp Auschwitz in 1942 and fell in love with a girl whose number he tattooed. It’s a true story which follows themes of love, survival and hope as an unforgettable love story unfolds in the midst of an atrocity. I found it to be an extremely emotive, thought provoking and inspiring story which stays with you long after you turn the last page. It’s a very gripping and deeply disturbing novel which encapsulates the horrors of the holocaust and simultaneously sheds a light of comfort and hope; even in the darkest most tragic times, love and hope prevails. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B, Year 11 student
