A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

On Monday, we were delighted to welcome back one of our former students, Dr. Matilda Scott, a counselling psychologist working within the NHS. Dr Scott is currently supporting people who struggle with eating disorders and has worked across a variety of mental health services. In her talk, she shared her journey from Waldegrave to becoming a psychologist, discussing what the role entails and providing great inspiration to her successors at Waldegrave. On Tuesday, Year 12 Spanish students made their way to the BFI with the brightest disposition on a rather rainy day. They took part in a workshop on the film they are studying: Volver by Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar. The workshop was conducted mainly in Spanish and the students were offered an overview of Almodóvar’s work. Students explored his themes, characterization and his style. Some of our students made really perceptive contributions, microphone in hand. They studied key scenes and engaged with in-depth textual analysis. The event finished with the screening of the film which left them shocked, intrigued and curious to learn more about the genius that is Almodóvar. Students truly seized the day! Also on Tuesday, our Photography A Level students spent the day in Central London, visiting the Taylor Wessing Photo Prize Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. After the gallery visit, students enjoyed walking along the Thames for their urban photoshoots. This hands-on experience allowed our students to further develop their practice and enhance their photographic skills while leaving them inspired and excited to explore their creativity. Today, our Year 12 Art and Photography students have headed to the Emmanuel Centre to attend the Art & Design in Action programme. During this trip our students will have the chance to meet and learn from four established artists working in different areas, to get a taste of what inspires them and how they make their living as artists. Also today, a number of students have spent the day at St. Augustine’s Church where they are busy rehearsing for the Carol Concert taking place later tonight. We hope everyone has a lovely evening at this event. Next week will be a festive one for our students, with the Christmas lunch taking place on Wednesday 13 December for KS5. Please note that if your child does not wish to partake in the Christmas lunch on this day, they should purchase food at break instead. Then, on Thursday 14 December, students have the opportunity to wear a Christmas jumper over their uniform in place of the usual school jumper. Students and their families are kindly requested to make a donation either via ParentPay or our JustGiving page, with all proceeds going to Save the Children.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a book written in the perspective of a 15 year old boy named Charlie, who is entering a new nerving year of highschool. It follows the life of him and his friends and the challenges that they face, finding their true selves in the process.

What I found most powerful was hearing about the experiences of the different characters as they were growing up.
