CONCRETE SOCIETY AWARDS

NORTHERN IRELAND REGION AWARDS 2023

HIGHLY COMMENDED: MACRETE IRELAND LTD NORTH STAND, TALLAGHT STADIUM, SOUTH DUBLIN ROI

Macrete scores innovative stadium construction triumph

M acrete Ireland Ltd received high commendation for its pivotal role in developing Tallaght Stadium’s North Stand. Overcoming the challenge of fusing structural stability, aesthetics and commercial feasibility was achieved through innovative design and concealed connections via unique manufacturing solutions. This approach integrates precast elements, eco-friendly materials and innovative techniques, demonstrating a modern construction process that balances functionality, aesthetics and sustainability. Employing these methods, Macrete engineered, produced and installed a stand entirely composed of precast concrete components. Ingenious hidden connections, notably in raker beams, columns and rafter units, eliminated the necessity for a conventional steel frame, which is the standard method of stadium construction. The Judging Panel was notably impressed by the stand’s exclusive reliance on precast concrete. The project’s clean visual appeal, coupled with concealed connections, delivered an aesthetically pleasing result. The company’s dedication to sustainability was evident through the use of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) in concrete mixes and employing steel reinforcement with high recycled content.

The Macrete team was Highly Commended at the 2023 Concrete Society NI Region Award night.

HIGHLY COMMENDED: ARUP BUSWAY BRIDGE AND RAMPS, BELFAST TRANSPORT HUB Arup’s concrete brilliance: winning commendation

A rup received high commendation at the 2023 Concrete Society NI Region Awards for its part in the development of the Busway Bridge and Ramps. This is a key element of the Belfast Transport Hub, which realigns the existing busway to bridge over the existing railway line. It consists of an impressive 50m single span, half-through weathering, steel concrete composite bridge. Also included are a series of complex piled reinforced concrete approach ramps which span over poor ground and two existing underground structures. Given the extremely constrained nature of the site and complex curved geometry of the ramps, careful coordination and clash detection was required during the design phase. This coordination was facilitated through the use of a fully integrated 3D Revit model, with all 2D construction drawings produced directly from this. The Judging Panel was impressed by the curved geometrical complexity of the piled approach ramps and the methods used by Arup to overcome the numerous site issues.
