NORTHERN IRELAND REGION AWARDS 2023

HIGHLY COMMENDED: DESIGN ID HELICAL STAIRCASE, KING’S COLLEGE, LONDON Design ID has success in its DNA

D esign ID was highly commended at the 2023 Concrete Society NI Region Award held at the Europa Hotel on November 9. It received the recognition for its helical staircase, reinforced concrete structure which provides the centre piece to the Department of Engineering at King’s College London. It is a feat of construction and engineering which looks like a work of art. The design was inspired by the work of Rosalind Franklin, who captured the first images of DNA molecules at King’s College in the 1950s. The stair was designed for 4kN/m2 variable load, Category C35 – stairs in institutional buildings subjected to crowds, with the balustrade taking a horizontal load of 1.5 kN/m at a height of 1.1m. The Judging Panel admired this complicated helical
