HAVING WORKED THEIR WAY UP THROUGH THE ROLES FROM SITE LABOURER TO MANAGEMENT, BROTHERS JONATHAN CLEARY AND RYAN CLEARY ARE FOLLOWING IN THEIR PARENTS’ FOOTSTEPS… Going the extra mile for clients
W ork to extend fabrication halls at Harland & Wolff, to accommodate the Belfast shipyard’s Royal Fleet Auxiliary contract, is among Cleary Contract’s current projects. The £8m project, scheduled for completion in August 2024, is among a raft of diverse contracts the family firm has underway. Reflecting its extensive client portfolio, further projects range from a new building for Armstrong Medical to restoration work at Campbell College and factory extensions for SAM Mouldings, Ulster Carpets and Brett Martin. And earlier this year, Cleary completed a £5m factory extension for Coca-Cola HBC, creating an additional 45,500sqft of manufacturing space. The contracts mark the latest additions to a prestigious portfolio, which has included sympathetic updates to increase the accessibility of Stormont Parliament Buildings in 2005 and a major refurb keeping safe 900,000 passengers passing through Lanyon Place Train Station while construction was underway in 2018. Translink, Kingsbridge Private Healthcare, Frasers Group and Henderson Group have all become key clients for the business, while it also completes numerous projects for schools, churches and manufacturers.
Leading the firm’s continued expansion are brothers Operations Manager Jonathan Cleary and Project Manager Ryan Cleary, who joined Cleary Contracting in 2005. Trained as an electrician and joiner respectively, “we’ve been through all the roles within the business from site labourer through to management,” said Jonathan. “Myself and my brother, we’re continuing to grow the company as our parents have done and we only see one way and that’s forward. “Over the last five years, we’ve seen real growth in the business in terms of increasing our client base and our project size. We’ve really made it a pursuit of having as much variety as possible on our CV.” “When we’re asked to do anything, we always say yes because if you say no, they’ll go to someone else. Our goal has always been to be the contractor of choice; you’ve tried and tested us, now hit repeat. We build relationships.” Ryan said: “We have always tried to finish on time and do a good job with no comebacks and have a really good work ethic, putting in the hours to get the job done.” “You have to go the extra mile. We’re used to working nights, weekends or whatever is needed to facilitate the client because at the end of the day, the client is always right.”
