“We like slow, continuous growth and we’re building a very good team of people around us. I like to think we treat our staff well and that’s why we have a high level of staff retention. “We’re always trying to attract talent and make the work setting as enjoyable as we can with investment in modern equipment, vehicles, plant and offices.” While Cleary Contracting remains based at the same site where it was founded at the family home in Randalstown in 1983, its offices were moved into a new purpose-built space in 2008 and construction will commence to double the space in January 2024.
Recently the whole team, together with their partners, were treated to a day out at Down Royal Racecourse to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the firm. “It was a very good day of bonding,” said Jonathan Cleary, Operations Manager. “We are a family business, the business is a family and we all get on well. “We have good longstanding staff who have come with us on this journey of growth. A lot have been with us in excess of 20 years, which has probably contributed to our gold Investor in People (IiP) status. We’ve been with IiP since 2009.

And the brothers operate an ethos of being present with their team and extending respect to all employees. “It helps if you walk in and talk to everybody and you’re not undermining anyone and you’re all on the same level,” said Ryan. Paying subcontractors in a timely manner is also important. Jonathan said: “We’re always getting asked something at the 11th hour and like to think we have somebody in our supply chain who will turn up for you on the day. They’ll deliver because you’ve treated them well.”
