How a Terrible Decision Almost Cost Me My Eyebrows THE TALE OF THE FLAMING LAWNMOWER
Okay folks, hold onto your hats: I’m about to do something I’ll
Amazingly, no one shouted, “This is a terrible idea!” when I popped the cap. So, with the foggy brain of a teenager, I lit it up. You can probably guess what happened next. After just one flick of the lighter, there was a “WOOSH” and a huge jet of flame appeared in the dark. The fumes coming out of the tank caught fire just feet from my face. It looked like a torch blowing out of the lawnmower! The heat made my eyes water, and I could smell burning hair on the breeze as my eyebrows singed. But I wasn’t thinking about any of that. Instead, I was focused on the brand-new Lexus parked just a short distance away from the flaming mower. It was only a week old! “If I blow up that car, I’m dead,” I thought. My stepbrothers took off running. But I had to save that Lexus! So, I started scrambling around looking for a way to put the fire out. I poured water into the gas tank but it did no good. I thought about tipping the mower over and shoveling sand into the tank, but I knew if I did that, the motor would be ruined. Then I had my brightest idea yet. I reached for the fire, grabbed the gas cap, and managed to jam it back in place, sealing off the tank. By the grace of God, the torch went out. There must not have been much fuel left or the mower would have exploded for sure. I collapsed in relief. Fortunately, the mower came out of the ordeal unharmed. It wasn’t my finest hour. I still count my lucky stars I didn’t get in trouble that night. The truth is that all of the adults around me were slightly intoxicated by that point in the party. That was my saving grace. Instead of yelling at me, they fell over laughing! Ask anyone who was there that night and they’ll still chuckle about the lawnmower with the torch coming out of it. My worst penalty was my singed eyebrows, which everyone got to see at the wedding the next day.
2021 APRIL
probably regret. In honor of April Fools’ Day and all of the general tomfoolery this month brings, I’ve
talked myself into telling you an embarrassing story. Looking back, I can admit that it’s funny, but the laugh is entirely at my expense.
It happened on a warm summer night when I was 15. My dad was set to marry my
amazing stepmom the next morning, so we had their rehearsal dinner and invited everyone over to our place for a bonfire afterward. My dad and I still lived in the double-wide trailer where Chiro1Source got its start, so we lit up the fire on that land.
We had a riding lawnmower back then, and since we were
bored country kids, it was our main form of entertainment that night. I hopped on and manned the wheel, and my soon-to-be stepbrothers and the other kids took turns riding around behind me. Then, late in the night, the lawnmower started to sputter. After a few minutes, it rolled to a stop. My first thought was that the mower was out of gas. So, I hopped off and unscrewed the gas cap. I tried to peer inside to check the gas level, but it was too dark for me to see much. That’s when I did something really stupid.
Happy April Fools' Day from someone who checks gas with a lighter.
Instead of reaching for my cellphone (which, to be honest, I might not even have had yet), I borrowed my buddy’s lighter.
“After just one flick of the lighter, there was a 'WOOSH' and a huge jet of flame appeared in the dark.”
Get in Shape for Your Next Backpacking Trip 3 Essential Areas to Focus On
GOOD HELLO C The Easy Way to I
Imagine you have a teenage athlete sitting in your office. Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, or a similar condition is wreaking havoc on their body. You know they would benefit from Kinesio Taping. But realistically, how likely is it they’ll keep up the practice? It would be so much easier if you could offer a solution that would fit into their daily routine.
Backpacking in the mountains puts a fun twist on the standard campout. By packing all your gear miles from the nearest roads, you can leave the whole world behind and just exist in nature. That said, backpacking can also put a lot of strain on your body — unless you properly prepare for it.
Peak backpacking season isn’t too far away, but it could take a couple of months to physically prepare for your next big trip. So, now is the perfect time
Luckily, you can! The medical compression socks we now stock from Lasso Gear make it possible for chiropractors to give patients that easy solution. Lasso Gear’s socks are ideal for people battling musculoskeletal conditions, recovering from foot or ankle injuries, or suffering from poor circulation, muscle weakness, or instability.
to start working toward some of the following fitness goals:
INCREASE MUSCLE STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE Your leg and core muscles, as well as your shoulders and lower back (ideally to a lesser extent), will do most of the heavy lifting when you’re hauling a 30–50-pound pack up a trail. With that in mind, you should devote two nonconsecutive days each week to strengthening these muscle groups. A few good exercises to increase leg strength are jump squats, single-leg deadlifts, step-ups, and hip rolls. A simple way people can increase core strength is by doing planks. IMPROVE YOUR CARDIO HEALTH Backpacking includes a lot of walking while carrying heavy weight at a high altitude, which means it’s just as important to get your
“Taping wears off in 30 minutes, and bracing is overly bulky and rigid. It’s not a great daily solution for people looking for pain relief,” explains Lasso Gear founder and CEO Partha Unnava. “We created technology that essentially leverages the compression side of apparel to do the same thing Kinesio Tape would do: support key ligaments and tendons using compression patterns placed in accordance with the anatomy of the body.”
cardiovascular system into shape as it is to strengthen your muscles. Dedicate three days each week — alternating with your strength training days — to building your cardio health with activities like trail running, biking, swimming, or other aerobic exercises. IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE Backpacking trails are rough, and you'll need good balance to navigate obstacles and step over boulders, creeks, and large roots. The good news is that increased strength and balance go hand in hand. Building up the muscles in your legs and core will help improve your balance, as will taking walks or runs on uneven trails or terrain. These are just a few quick tips to help you get in shape this backpacking season. Lasso Gear was created by and for athletes. Partha, who has a background in the medical device field, was inspired to design his own compression sock after breaking his ankle during a basketball game. “I went through rehab, and the following year, I taught myself to dunk for the first time,” Partha remembers. “It showed me purely how important movement is, not just to our physical health but to our mental health, spiritual health, and quality of life.”

Athletes like Champ Bailey, Earl Thomas, Uli Becker, and Angel McCoughtry already use Lasso Gear, but its socks are equally ideal for anyone who spends extended time on their feet or struggles with mobility, including firefighters, hospital workers, delivery drivers, and military personnel. “I think at the end of the day, the core thing we’re trying to do [at Lasso Gear] is make health care cool, especially preventive health care,” Partha says. When the “cool” product is backed by scientific research, it’s a win-win for both patients and chiropractors. On Jan. 1, when most people are worn out from drinking champagne and watching the ball drop, our team has an important assignment: sending out catalogs. That’s right! Every year on the very first day, copies of our print catalog wing their way to all of our customers. Many chiropractors like to order their supplies online these days, but our print catalog is a popular alternative for people who would rather not stare at screens more than they need to. Plus, there’s another bonus: our catalog game.
If you’ve been a Chiro1Source customer for a while, you might remember this hunt from years past. Usually, we challenge you to find a photo of Josh and Marah’s dogs, Hershey and Rock, somewhere in the catalog. Then, when you find the picture, all you have to do is let us know which page the dogs were on when you place your next order and you get a free gift! This year, we’ve mixed it up a bit in honor of Josh and Marah’s baby, Bennett, who was born in 2020. Instead of hunting for the dogs this time around, you’ll need to hunt for the baby! The outcome is still the same, though: When you call in or place your order online, simply note which page of the catalog you found the little man on and you’ll win a free gift. So, what are you waiting for? If your catalog has been gathering dust, it’s time to play the game and win your prize! And if your catalog was lost in the mail this year, don’t worry — we’re happy to send you another one. Visit Chiro1Source.com and click “Request a Catalog Today” on the homepage to make it happen. Happy hunting!

‘Zero to One’: A Book Review

HOW TO GET FROM ‘ZERO TO ONE’ CREATE AND NURTURE ORIGINAL BUSINESS IDEAS
“What important truth do very few people agree with you on?”
Facebook, SpaceX, Lyft, and Airbnb whose ideas were so novel at the start that they were perceived as risky by many. Throughout the book, Thiel shares his wealth of knowledge garnered from a long, successful career of recognizing and acting on original ideas. According to him, and anyone else who has ever tried creating something wholly unique, developing an original idea is no easy task. The difficulty of originality even led Mark Twain to once say “There is no such thing as a new idea. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope.” But in “Zero to One,” Thiel proves that coming up with original ideas is possible, and he provides readers with helpful tips and lessons for how to get there. One such lesson: Stop trying to be the next Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg because “if you’re copying these guys, you aren’t learning from them.”
That’s entrepreneur and author Peter Thiel’s favorite interview question. To Thiel, a person’s answer to that question provides insight into whether they’ll be able to find success as an entrepreneur. Ideally, if you can answer with something like “Most people believe in X, but the truth is the opposite of X,” then you’re well on your way from zero to one and creating an original business idea. That’s what Thiel explores in his book “Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future.” “Zero to One” is all about coming up with and nurturing unique ideas, which are the foundation of game-changing businesses. As a co-founder and investor in a number of companies that have changed the business landscape, Thiel has some authority on this subject. He co-founded Cofinity (which later became PayPal) and invested in startups like
Thiel uses his favorite interview question to try to identify original thinkers. These are the people who take their businesses from zero to one because they looked at past successes and thought, “I can do it differently, and I can do it better.” If you want to be in that group, then reading Thiel’s advice in “Zero to One” is a great place to start.
