There is no way to sugar-coat it, 2019 has been a chaotic and uncertain year. The year started with all eyes on March 31 and the Brexit deadline. That was missed and so was its successor. Brexit caused one prime minister to resign and another fight to get an election in a bid to end the impasse. Whether or not the election settles matters remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain, business is getting twitchy about not knowing. Through our countless conversations with business people up and down the county, we know that the one thing they want is an end to uncertainty. They are all aware a change is coming, they just want to know what that change is so they can finally enact it. An optician would clarify 2020 vision as a person having great clarity in what they see. All of us are hoping that our new government has a vision for the year 2020 that is similarly clear and, more importantly, one that delivers. We’ve all had to deal with the chaos, the fears about tariffs, not knowing how imports and exports will work and the need to stockpile. Business has been adaptable and responsive to what has happened and, in Gloucestershire more often than not, our fine manufacturers, engineers, farmers and developers have coped.
