THE FUTURE OF THE HIGH STREET

New look King’s Square to become Gloucester’s ‘focal point’

At the heart of every great city is a focal point where citizens can congregate, agitate and celebrate. It’s where the Christmas lights are switched on each year, where people flock to celebrate when the England football team wins crucial World Cup matches. It’s where protests are centred and it’s where people go to sit out on days when the weather allows and simply watch the world go past. We all long for the day when Gloucester Rugby claim the Premiership title and there is an open- top bus parade through the streets. If – no let’s be confident, when – that happens, where would the Cherry and White-clad hordes go to celebrate with the team and have a formal reception?

Not a chance. Not yet, anyway…

Because the latest renovation that is set to happen as part of the extraordinary modern-day regeneration of Gloucester is coming to King’s Square. Last month, Gloucester City Council unveiled its plans to turn the square into a “focal point” for the city. A set of tantalising images was released, detailing just what the transformed square will look like if the multi-million pound plans are given the thumbs up. Those plans form part of a wider regeneration plan for the King’s Quarter area of the city that are already underway. And while it’s great that the area between the square and the city’s railway station will be transformed beyond all recognition, let’s focus on the square itself. Because the plans are quite exciting.

Where would the good folk of Gloucester go to have their Trafalgar Square moment? King’s Square?
