The Canadian tradition of keeping Terry’s dream alive continued Sunday with the Annual Terry Fox Run. “It’s like a tradition,” said Julia Fortin of Team Ouimet Farm in Vankleek Hill, as she and her fellow Fox Trotters gathered at Voyageur Provincial Park near Chute-à- Blondeau early in the morning Sept. 14. i8FBMMTVQQPSUUIF'PVOEBUJPOu Terry Fox was a high school and university athlete, who lost a leg in 1977 due to cancer. In 1980 he began the Marathon of Hope across Canada run to raise money for and public awareness about cancer research. He ran the equivalent of a full marathon distance each day, starting out from St. +PIOT /FXGPVOEMBOEBGUFSEJQQJOHBGPPU into the Atlantic Ocean. His goal was to cross Canada to Victoria on Vancouver Island in B.C. and finish his run by dipping a foot into the Pacific Ocean. Although there was little public notice or fanfare when he set out from St. John’s April 12 1980, his progress, often through foul weather, through the Maritimes, Québec, and into Ontario soon gained both national and international attention and support. He continued his daily run, despite shin splints and an inflamed knee, until Sept. 1, outside of Thunder Bay, when shortness of breath, severe chest pain, and coughing fit forced him to stop. A trip to the hospital resulted in a diagnosis that his cancer had returned and metastasized to his lungs. Terry Fox ran 5,373 kilometres in 143 days and had raised more than $1.7 million for the Canadian Cancer Society. He hoped to continue the run getting treatment for his second bout with cancer. He died June 28 1981. The last words reported from Terry Fox were: “If I don’t make it, the Marathon of Hope must continue.” Since then the Terry Fox Run has be- come an annual tradition across Canada and around the world wherever there are Canadians. “Terry Fox is my hero,” said Ria Korno of Hawkesbury. “He was a brave young man.” “I know so many people who have or had cancer,” said Linda Groulx, a Hawkesbury resident who has done 40 Terry Fox Runs. “I just want to give back.” i8F BMM LOPX QFPQMF XIP IBE DBODFS u said Paul Lacombe of Team Pharmacie Alfred Pharmachoix. 3 erreurs à ne pas commettre avec votre réfrigérateur
« Pour quelles raisons devrais-je me procurer une laveuse à pression? »
Le des électroménagers les plus importants dans une maison. C’est pourquoi il est essentiel de bien l’utiliser et de l’entretenir correctement pour profiter d’aliments sains et prolonger sa durée de vie. Or, plusieurs personnes commettent des erreurs avec cet appareil. En voici donc trois à éviter absolument! 1. SURCHARGER L’APPAREIL réfrigérateur est l’un Remplir son réfrigérateur jusqu’à ce qu’il ne reste plus de place, ne serait- ce que pour y ranger un simple pot de yogourt individuel, pourrait sembler judicieux. Or, cette manière de procéder nuit à la circulation de l’air à l’intérieur. Résultat? Les aliments sont refroidis de façon inégale, ce qui peut favoriser leur détérioration. 2. L’APPUYER DIRECTEMENT AU MUR Il est important de laisser un dégagement entre le réfrigérateur et le mur afin d’assurer une bonne circulation
de l’air autour de l’appareil. Une ventilation adéquate permet au moteur de dissiper la chaleur efficacement, ce qui prévient la surchauffe. Un simple espace d’au moins cinq centimètres maintient la performance optimale du réfrigérateur et réduit sa consommation d’énergie. 3. NE PAS LE LAVER ASSEZ SOUVENT Il faut idéalement le nettoyer toutes les deux semaines ou, au minimum, une fois par mois. Pourquoi? Parce qu’un réfrigérateur sale favorise le développement de bactéries et de moisissures qui peuvent vous rendre très malade! De plus, laver l’appareil régulièrement contribue à prévenir l’apparition d’odeurs nauséabondes. Pour de meilleurs résultats, videz-le entièrement, puis lavez ses éléments amovibles avec de l’eau chaude savonneuse. Nettoyez les surfaces intérieures avec un mélange d’eau et de vinaigre blanc.

Elle est aussi parfaite pour nettoyer les meubles de jardin, les clôtures, les caba- nons et même les modules de jeux des en- fants. En quelques minutes, toutes les sur- faces retrouvent leur éclat! PRÉCAUTIONS Mais attention : pour ne pas gaspiller de la précieuse eau potable, il faut en faire bon usage! Évitez les lavages inutiles et suivez les recommandations du fabricant à la lettre. Par exemple, sachez que certaines surfaces plus fragiles peuvent être endommagées par la puissance du jet. Selon l’appareil, il est pos- sible de changer de buse ou de sélectionner une pression moins forte. Faites vos devoirs pour prévenir les mauvaises surprises! Vous ne savez pas quel appareil choisir?
