Park and Recreation Month 2024: Where You Belong
This year, Park and Recreation Month's theme, "Where You Belong," honors the efforts of park and recreation experts nationwide in creating a sense of belonging in their communities. We achieve this by offering inclusive programs, vital services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible areas that encourage meaningful connections.
Since 1985, July has been designated as Park and Recreation Month in the United States. This celebration aims to foster robust, lively, and resilient communities by highlighting the impact of parks and recreation. It is also a time to honor over 160,000 full-time park and recreation experts, as well as numerous part-time, seasonal workers, and volunteers, who play a crucial role in upkeeping our local, state, and community parks.

Why Is Water Safety So Important? Water Safety Tips It’s peak summer time and water activities are a great way to beat the summer heat, but it only takes a moment for a child or weak swimmer to drown. Tragedies can occur while responding to a text, tending to a fishing line, or even applying sunscreen. Drownings resulting in death and injury
are a daily occurrence in various settings like home pools, hot tubs, beaches, oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, bathtubs, and even buckets. By enhancing water competency through improved swimming abilities, water safety awareness, and assisting others, water-related activities can be not only safer but also enjoyable.
Stay Water Smart American Red Cross states below ways to stay water competent. Learn more by clicking here. Take these sensible precautions when you’re around water (even if you’re not planning to swim):
Know your limitations, including physical fitness, medical conditions. Never swim alone; swim with lifeguards and/or water watchers present.
Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for your weight and size and the water activity. Always wear a life jacket while boating, regardless of swimming skill. Swim sober. Understand the dangers of hyperventilation and hypoxic blackout. Know how to call for help. Understand and adjust for the unique risks of the water environment you are in, such as: River currents.
Ocean rip currents. Water temperature. Shallow or unclear water. Underwater hazards, such as vegetation and animals.
