Greening Our Schools Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends and Colleagues, US Green Building Council New Jersey Chapter is a core partner in the groundbreaking NJ Sustainable Schools Consortium . The goal of the Consortium is “creating healthier schools at lower costs.” The NJ
Sustainable Schools Consortium is aligned with the US Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools (GRS) initiative, and goes far beyond GRS as well. USGBC NJ brings to the Consortium valuable expertise and focused training, and provides access to a network of motivated professionals. The Sustainable Schools Consortium dovetails perfectly with USGBC National’s Center for Green Schools , whose mission is: green schools for everyone within this generation. In fact, the Consortium helps puts New Jersey at the forefront of greening our schools in the US. According to the USGBC Center for Green Schools, “By promoting the design and construction of new green schools and by greening existing schools, we can make a tremendous impact on student health, school operational costs and the environment.”

Furthermore, green schools do not have to be new schools. There are approximately 133,000 schools across the country. As the economy forces school districts to slow or even halt capital improvement plans, many are focusing on what can be done to improve the efficiency and environmental quality of existing facilities. As with new green construction, implementing green strategies into existing school buildings can be cost effective. On Sept. 29, 2012, the Center for Green Schools at the USGBC will host the first ever Green Apple Day of Service . For one day, advocates from across the country and around the world will come together in support of healthy, sustainable schools by taking real action in their communities. From South Africa to Canada, Korea to Brazil, every school can be better served by our commitment on this day. Visit http://mygreenapple.org/greenapple.aspx for more information on how to get involved. USGBC NJ is thrilled to be working toward green schools on so many different fronts and we hope that you and your organizations will consider participating in your respective districts. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or additional information. Sincerely, Florence Block Executive Director USGBC NJ
