Moso Bamboo Decking & Siding Guide

The next generation of Hardwood Decking & Siding is here and available at Boise Cascade!

MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo

More stable than any hardwood MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo Decking is very stable, as a result of thermally modified bamboo strips combined with High Density ® compression. Even many years after installation, Bamboo Thermo Boards stay straight. The boards are more stable than any tropical hardwood, and many composites. Bamboo Thermo does not warp, twist, cup or bow. Expansion and contraction is almost unheard of.

Bamboo Benefits: • Harder than many outdoor-rated exotic hard- woods and other thermally modified lumbers

Bamboo looks: • MOSO ® Bamboo Outdoor Lumber is a natural product, which can vary in color, grain and appearance. • Color will change over time depending on the maintenance schedule. • Bamboo Thermo has a brown to dark brown color when installed, which turns into a lighter brown color several weeks after installation. Without further maintenance the color becomes greyish relatively fast (similar to most other wood species). • Bamboo N-durance ® has a pleasant caramel color, which will fade slightly with UV exposure. Annual cleaning and oiling will maintain its beautiful and unique appearance. MOSO ® Bamboo N-durance ® MOSO ® Bamboo N-durance ® is a solid, Outdoor- Density ® board, made from compressed bamboo strips. Bamboo N-durance ® has a warm, amber color, resulting from a steam-pressure treatment of the bamboo material. The performance and weathering properties of MOSO ® Bamboo N-durance ® are also very similar to outdoor-rated exotic hardwoods. Care and cleaning Unlike Thermo, annual oiling of N-durance ® is required. The factory applied finish is Woca Exterior Oil (color: Teak). If Woca products are not available in your area, any penetrating exterior wood oil in the color of your choice is acceptable.

• Sustainable harvesting practices • Large amounts of carbon storage • Superior dimensional stability • Structural end-match system • Quick & economical installation • Highest durability Class 1

• Class A fire rating • 25 year guarantee

MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo is a solid, Thermo-Density ® engineered lumber, made from compressed bamboo strips. A special process, involving thermal modification (at 392F/200C) and high pressure, provides MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo with impressive hardness and stability. The performance and weathering properties of MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo are very similar to outdoor-rated exotic hardwoods. Care and cleaning Under the influence of wind, rain, frost, and sunshine (UV) the MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo will weather. Unfinished MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo should be treated with an exterior penetrating oil finish a few weeks after installation. MOSO ® recommends cleaning the deck with Messmer’s Wood & Deck Cleaner or other oxalic acid based cleaner. Annual cleaning and maintenance of your MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo Lumber is recommended.

The sustainability of MOSO ® Bamboo Outdoor Lumber:

MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo and N-durance ® offer sustainable advantages. The inclusion of Bamboo Outdoor Lumber on a project contributes to a higher LEED, BREEAM, and Green Star certification score for green building projects. That’s one of the reasons why you can find MOSO ® Outdoor Lumber and other MOSO ® Bamboo Products in many sustainable reference projects all over the world.

Unsurpassed growing speed Bamboo: the fastest growing plant in the world Because of the fast growth, bamboo is managed as an agricultural crop: the annual harvest of the 4 to 5-year-old stems, compared to 60-80 years for tropical hardwood, provides a steady annual income to farmers and stimulates the bamboo plant to reproduce even faster. Therefore, by default, no deforestation occurs with production of MOSO ® Bamboo Products, while large amounts of CO 2 are captured in the bamboo forests and products.

Carbon storage in bamboo Biobased materials act as CO 2 sinks

The amount of CO 2 that is locked in the end products can be calculated. For example, MOSO ® Bamboo Thermo locks 104 lbs. of CO 2 per ft³ of material, which is almost* equivalent to the CO 2 emitted by an average passenger vehicle during a trip from San Diego to Los Angeles!

Through photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and convert it into glucose (building block for biomass) and oxygen. The CO 2 is stored in the material for the lifetime of the product, and even longer if the product is recycled into new, durable products. Due to the fast growth – and related high yields - Moso bamboo locks far more CO 2 in durable products compared to wood species.

The average 400SF Moso Bamboo Outdoor Deck captures 2,600lbs of carbon dioxide.

MOSO ® Bamboo Deck & Siding Boards are 6ft long This makes them ideal for all jobsite conditions, hard access, rooftops, and everything in between. 16” joist centers are not an issue for decking nor siding since MOSO® Bamboo Outdoor Boards are extremely rigid and feature a structural tongue & groove end-match system allowing the installer to seam boards off-joist. Estimate based on square footage because board length doesn’t matter.
