MY VACATION TO EGYPT
Not the Best, but Maybe the Most Memorable Vacation Ever
With it now officially being summer, I thought I’d share what might be the most memorable vacation I’ve ever had. I use the word “memorable” to describe it because, while it certainly wasn’t the worst vacation ever, it certainly wasn’t the best. It also wasn’t technically summer when I took this vacation, even though if you had been there, you would have sworn it was the middle of July. In October 2019, my husband and I took a trip to Egypt. He had a business trip there, and I was excited to go. I’d seen a music special that Beyoncé did in Egypt, in one of the pyramids, and that had me all hyped to go. Before I say anything else, let me just say this: When I go on vacation, I enjoy luxury. I don’t like roughing it. If wherever I’m going isn’t as nice as my home, then I’d rather just stay at home. Our trip to Egypt was less of a luxurious stay and more of an adventure. Don’t get me wrong, the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx were definitely worth seeing, but the oppressive heat made it hard to fully enjoy it. The heat also makes you thirsty really quick, but you can’t drink the water that comes from the tap in Egypt. If your body isn’t used to drinking it, you’ll get sick. So, we had to drink bottled water everywhere we went.
To make that more complicated, you had to check the bottles you got from some vendors, because they might sell you a bottle that they’d filled with tap water so they could sell it to desperate tourists. We learned to check the seals before we bought and drank any of our water. In the end, that didn’t matter — we all got sick because we ate vegetables that had been washed in the tap water. No one had told us those might be dangerous. Cairo itself was a lot dirtier than I thought it would be. There was a lot of litter on the roads. Seeing some of the people there made Egypt feel like it was another world. I saw construction workers doing their jobs without boots or helmets (some of them were working in their bare feet!), and there sadly seemed to be a lot of poverty and begging. In Tahrir Square, one of the main public spaces in Cairo, a group of men with machine guns sat atop a tank. My husband began taking pictures of them, before one of them motioned at him to stop. It was all so different from what I was used to and very eye-opening. I don’t say all this to be judgmental. At that time, Egypt had just been through a series of protests that had left the country in pieces, so we may have caught the country at a bad time with

our visit. However, Egypt’s state at that time meant they were glad to receive tourists. People were very kind to us, which helped make up for the water that made us sick, the not-so-luxurious accommodations, and the heat. Before I wrap up, I want to be clear: The main reason I wasn’t thrilled with our vacation to Egypt was because I set expectations that I maybe shouldn’t have. I don’t know that I’ll ever go back, but if you ever get a chance to go, you might enjoy it! Just don’t go there in October — it was far too hot during that time of year! Whether you’re going to Egypt or just one state over for your next vacation, I hope you have a nice, relaxing time with your family, friends, and loved ones. After this past year, we all deserve a nice break!

You’ve probably seen motorcyclists zipping along the road, weaving through traffic without a care. So, you might be surprised to learn that accidents involving a motorcycle and a car are often the driver’s fault! Whether you’re in a car or on a motorcycle, we all have a personal responsibility to keep ourselves safe and act responsibly. However, drivers especially have a responsibility to look out for the safety of motorcyclists when on the road. While you should hope motorcyclists ride responsibly themselves, there are a few reasons drivers should take special care to look out for motorcyclists. Motorcyclists have a smaller profile on the road. It’s easy to look out for vehicles that are similar to the one you’re driving, but motorcycles can fly under the radar. Motorcyclists are more exposed. Even if motorcyclists wear all the necessary safety gear, they don’t have a seatbelt or airbags to keep them from flying off their bikes if they crash. That can make a motorcyclist’s injuries more serious in a wreck. IT’S NOT JUST A MOTORCYCLIST’S JOB TO STAY SAFE ON THE ROAD It’s a Driver’s Responsibility, Too!
Orchestrate Your Workout
Whether summer temperatures drive you to work outside or simply make you want to move indoors where the air conditioner is blasting, having an upbeat playlist can help you quickly pass the time and feel good, too. There’s no better way to learn how to put together a motivational playlist than to ask a pro. Peloton’s bikes and treadmills are wildly popular, but now, users are working out through their app because of the high-energy instructors, many of whom have become known for their amazing playlists. Here are two instructors’ tips to put together a killer playlist. Mix It Up Instructor Leanne Hainsby is known for the eclectic, feel-good songs that keep people pedaling hard in her cycling classes. Hainsby credits her vast musical tastes to her time as a dancer, which expanded her playlist for workout music. Which songs make the cut? Ones that inspire. "I think people will be so surprised by how much they will push themselves when they're moved by the feeling of a song or how the music makes them feel,” she says. It doesn’t matter if it’s ambient electronic music or a lilting Johnny Cash tune, both of which can be found routinely on Hainby’s cycling playlists. Make It Themed Whether you’re obsessed with ‘90s pop, classic rock jams, or David Bowie, you can use a theme to create workout playlists you’ll love. This is a great trick pros like Peloton instructor Christine D’Ercole use. D’Ercole is beloved by many for her themed classes, which range from an indie rock beginners’ ride to a fan-favorite all ‘90s ride. She also has holiday- themed playlists, like the one for her Women’s History Month ride in March that featured only female artists. You can always hop onto Spotify and check out the Peloton page to see all of their instructors’ recent playlists. Use this for inspiration to create your own list or stream whichever compilation catches your attention for your next workout. PRO TIPS TO CREATE A MOTIVATING PLAYLIST
So, given those factors, how can you keep motorcyclists safe when you’re behind the wheel? Well, here are three suggestions:
1. Actively look for motorcycles on the road , just like you actively look for other cars.
2. Don’t drive distracted. Keep your hands off your phone, makeup, fast-food burger, or any other distraction.
3. Don’t drive recklessly. No running red lights, changing lanes without warning, or weaving in and out of traffic. Motorcyclists can get lost in your blind spot, and speeding decreases your time to react. As rudimentary as all that might sound, thousands of motorcycle accidents still occur every year. By incorporating just a little bit more responsibility into our driving habits, however, we can each do our part to bring those numbers down.

I Signed a Waiver Can I Still File a Lawsuit?
Say you’re going bungee jumping. Before making your way to the bridge, cliffside, or wherever it is you’re planning on getting enough adrenaline to fuel you for an entire year, the facilitators have you sign a waiver. When you sign, you give up your right to sue if you’re injured while leaping off a tall object, but does that mean suing is completely out of the question if you’re injured? In short, no. While waivers do protect businesses from constant lawsuits from people who injure themselves while doing incredibly dangerous activities, they’re not completely free from responsibility in keeping their patrons safe.
their equipment and the business environment safe, you could potentially file a lawsuit against them.
Were the staff mindful of your safety? Employees have procedures they must follow in order to make sure their customers are safe. If they were willfully negligent of those procedures and you, as a customer, are injured as a result, that would essentially void your waiver and give you the right to sue the company. Were you fully aware you signed away your right to sue? If you were under the influence of drugs and alcohol when you signed the waiver, you were forced to sign it, you couldn’t understand the language used, or there was another situation where you weren’t fully aware of what signing would do, then a personal injury attorney could potentially throw that waiver right out the window and help you file a lawsuit. While the presence of a waiver might make your personal injury case more complex, it doesn’t make it impossible to seek compensation for your injuries. 4 | Is Serena Williams Retiring?
IS SERENA WILLIAMS RETIRING?
young and vibrant. But if you follow the sport, you’ve probably heard the rumors that Williams is getting ready to retire. It’s rare for a tennis player to remain at the top of their game at 39, and on Feb. 17, Williams lost in the 2021 Australian Open Semifinals to Naomi Osaka. The loss hit her hard. As Insider reported, “Following the defeat, Williams placed her hand on her heart and saluted the crowd before breaking down in tears in her post-match press conference and saying: ‘If I ever say farewell, I wouldn't tell anyone.’” That certainly sounds like a hint at retirement. Williams is already considered a GOAT (greatest of all time) in women’s professional tennis, but if she retires now, she’ll be one Grand Slam victory short of tying Margaret Court, the most decorated female tennis player in modern history. It would be tough for someone as competitive as Williams to get so close and fall short — and her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, doesn’t think she’ll throw in the towel.
"I don't think she will stop until she at least wins a Grand Slam, because she came back to win Grand Slams [after her daughter was born]," he told People magazine. German tennis star Tommy Haas echoed Mouratoglou in an interview with Insider, saying, “I know deep down, as the competitor she is, she wants to break the record. I think ultimately that's why she's still playing, because she wants that number and she's going after it." During a discussion at the Silk Speaker Series at the University of San Francisco, Williams reportedly said her love of the game keeps her going. “I love what I do and that motivates me,” she said. As long as that love remains, odds are she’ll stay on the court. If you’re struggling to play a sport you enjoy and worry you might be getting too old for it, try channeling Williams. Remind yourself why you love the game, and you’ll find the strength to power through.
Inside the Mind of the GOAT
When rapper Megan Thee Stallion won three Grammy awards this spring, fans all over the world celebrated — including the 23-time Grand Slam-winning tennis player Serena Williams. Williams filmed a video of herself and her 3-year-old daughter, Alexis, jamming out to Stallion’s hit song “Body” and posted it to TikTok.
Dancing in a poofy, champagne-colored dress, the 39-year-old tennis player looked
