Functional Ability

Activities of Daily Living Approximately one-third (36.8%) of respondents reported some level of difficulty with bathing and/or other personal hygiene, with the percentage highest among respondents in their 80s (42.3%) and 90s (57.9%). This pattern was similar for the ability to dress oneself. While under one-third (31.2%) of all respondents noted any difficulty getting dressed, the percentages were greatest among respondents in their 80s (34.3%) and 90s (48.9%). Falls Nearly two-thirds (63.0%) of all respondents reported an issue with falls or almost falling, and this percentage increased with age. Whereas 47.7% of respondents in their 50s reported issues around falls, the majority (80.6%) of respondents in their 90s reported issues around falling. Similarly, while 58.9% of all respondents limited their activities due to a fear of falling, this was least common for respondents in their 50s (42.0%) and highest among respondents in their 90s (78.4%).

More than one-third (39.8%) of respondents reported difficulty moving around their home and this was most common among respondents in their 90s (63.8%). Nearly half (49.8%) of all respondents had some level of difficulty walking one block, however this percentage was highest among respondents in their 80s and 90s (63.9% and 76.5%, respectively). Similarly, whereas 67.2% of all respondents reported some form of difficulty climbing stairs, these percentages were higher among respondents in their 80s and 90s (74.5% and 83.3%, respectively). Three-quarters (75.0%) of all respondents reported difficulty with range of motion in bending or kneeling, with difficulty increasing with age.
