Transportation

Reading only the survey responses, one could believe that transportation is not much of a concern since access to transportation is a concern for few people and those without their own car report having someone available to drive them places. However, when information from the Community Listening Sessions is considered, those few who do not have their own car, especially those who cannot count on family, friends, or neighbors, have a very difficult time getting places. Ride hailing services are expensive or require access to, or knowledge of, technology beyond people’s ability, and public transportation such as VanTran is not convenient to use. Pima County is home to over 350,000 people who are at least 50 years old. Based on the results below, over 50,000 of them may be without transportation that is readily available. Another 20,000 may be homebound due to no transportation. While most (80.3%) respondents feel they have ready access to transportation when they need it, this sense of availability decreases with age with respondents in their 80s and 90s either disagreeing with the availability of transportation or reporting that they do not leave the house.

While close to three-quarters (70.8%) of respondents indicate driving a car as their primary mode of transportation, only about one-third of 90+ respondents drive independently and 40% receive transportation from people like family, neighbors, and caregivers.
