SEVEN THINGS THAT FAIL NOT

ON THE NUMBER 7. It has been said that “ the constant occurrence in Scrip ture of the number seven is the result of nothing short of Divine intention.” This number has been traced in one form or another in nearly every book in the Old Testament and the New. It is wonderfully associated with the history of the life and teaching of our Lord. Note: 1. The seven stages of His history in Phil. 2:6-9. 2. The seven characteristics of His wisdom in Prov. 3: 16-18. 3. The seven parables in Matt. 13. 4. The seven miracles in John, chapters 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11. 5. The seven prayers in Luke, chapters 3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 22. 6. The seven petitions in the Lord’s Prayer, Luke 11: 24. 7. The seven sayings on the cross, Luke 23:34; John 19: 26-28; Luke 23-43; Matt. 27:46; John 19:30; Luke 23:46. 8. The seven blessings from the throne, Rev. chapters 1, Seven is the number expressive of perfection. We see the 14, 16, 19, 20, 22. perfection of suffering in Peter’s seven references to the sufferings of Christ, 1 Peter, chapters 1-5; the perfection of benevolence in the seven gifts of Christ, John 4:10; 6: 51; 13:15; 14:27; 16:7; 17:8; 17:22, and the perfection of glory in the seven things which are associated in Eph. 1 and 3, with Christ and His Church, Eph. 1:6, 12, 14, 17, 18; 3: 14, 21. H. T. CLEAVING, OR STICKING TO 1. The believer should stick to God’s testimonies, Psa. 119:31. 2. Should become so identified with the word that he would cleave to it, as did the hand of .Eleazer, the son of Dodo, one of David mighty men, to the sword, 2 Sam. 23:10. 3. He should cleave to the Lord, Deut. 10:20; Acts 11:23. 4. A man should cleave unto his wife. No sanction in the Bible for divorce, save adultery. “ Husbands, love your wives,” Gen. 2:24; Eph. 5:25. 5. The Lord sticketh closer than a loving brother, Prov. 18:24. 6. So close that there will never be separation, Job 41:17; Rom. 8:38, 39; Phil. 1:6; Jno. 10:28. 7. For disobedience, the Lord sendeth affliction upon His saints, Psa. 38:2; Heb. 12:5-12. J. E. W.
