hundred dollars to be their doctor. So wonderfully God de livered him, and his heart was full of joy and praise with the glad tidings that some of these brigands seemed to have truly given their hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ. I cannot tell you now of the wonderful work of God in that region but ten or twelve years ago you could have counted the Christians all through that part of China (not exactly on the fingers of your hand— but they were under fifty all told) in connection with the China Inland Mission; and now today God has so wonderfully worked that there are literally thousands. Only two years ago those Christian converts were plead ing for missionaries to come to them They had come to a mission station, about six days travel away from them, the missionary had with h'im a beautiful dog, a foreign dog, and those people were so very much impressed with this dog— they had never seen one in their lives, so friendly, intelligent, clean and kindly, and so pleased to see him that they said, “ Isn’t that dog from heaven?” When the missionary said, “No, it is just a well trained foreign dog,” they could hardly believe it.” They begged the missionary to come back with them to the hills, but he could not pos sibly go. They said, “ If you cannot go, couldn’t you let us take the dog with us? Because if our people could just see that dog they would know that this religion is the true and heavenly doctrine if you would just send the dog.” Think of it— five thousand people wanting to know Christ and begging for a dog to come to them. And He looks down upon it all and He is coming— com ing very, very soon— to reckon with His servants. To ask us what we did with the precious responsibility of the gos pel. What we have done with our lives and our money; what we have done to meet needs like that!

reverance. It Is a terrible thing-—against all proprieties of nature, that people of very venerable age should be treated in that way.” But all his pleading did no good. Then the group rose and come to where we had been sleeping, and the evangelist said, “This is the King of the Brigands,” and then I realized how serious the situation was. It was the King of the Brigands with whom the evangelist had been pleading. The King assured us we would never escape out of his hands alive, but that he would keep us until he got what he wanted from the Government, and if there was any fighting, or any attempt to rescue us, we would be killed first. Then he commanded us to write a letter to our Con sul in the capital and tell them what was wanted. We wrote the letter and then they wanted us to get up, in the middle of the night, and go on, but this we refused to do. My husband told them we would only get sick if we did so, and that we would lie down until the morning. To this they agreed. I must confess that there were moments that night when cold terror seized me, but then we rediscovered the other certainty-—the certainty of this living power of the Word of God. One after another precious passages were -brought by the Holy Spirit to comfort- us until there was no room for terror, only room for love and praise. They sent me into the city the next day to intercede with the government in their behalf, but they kept my husband in the mountains for six weeks. Full of joy and love and sweet gentleness there among those brigands he lived Christ, telling them of Christ, and some of the men came back out of the mountains Christians. At last the brigands got so much to love him they wanted him to stay with them and offered him a salary of three
